My husband and I stayed at the Sala Samui for our honeymoon in January 2010. We got married in Koh Samui and stayed at the Amari Palm Reef and the Library beforehand as well.

This place was recommended to us as a great 'honeymoon place' which offered better value for money compared to Four Seasons and Six Senses. We stayed at the Garden Villa and even though the furniture wasn't super stylish and the rooms were small, we absolutely loved the outdoor bathroom and the plunge pool - and spent the majority of our time sun-bathing anyway. We also loved how they decorated our bed and the outdoor bath with flowers for our honeymoon. The restaurant was excellent as we loved the variety you get for breakfast and even went there frequently for lunch and dinner as well. We also had a luxurious spa treatment as well and highly recommend this to everyone!

The location was a bit secluded (Choeng Mon) and you would need to take a taxi or hire a scooter to get to Chaweng (where the action is), but since it was our honeymoon and we stayed at Chaweng a week prior, we weren't too fussed about being in a quieter location. The beach isn't as beautiful as Chaweng either, but it's definitely a lot quieter and I think with your own plunge pool and 2 infinity pools you aren't exactly spoilt for choice!

The good points: Set in lovely cove; setting is tranquil despite presence of other hotels on beach. Two beautiful pools with infinity edges. Very nice restaurant by beach and pool.
The negatives: Some of the rooms (we stayed in balcony room) are quite cramped--barely room for luggage. And the bathrooms, which are on the balcony (separated from rest of balcony only by curtains) were not exactly luxurious. They were not air conditioned so it was hot and muggy every time you went in. It was kind of a modern outhouse. I can understand putting the tub outside, but the toilet?

for some background --we were in koh samui 20 yrs. ago when it was a charming small beachside town. while we did not expect the same , we were overwhelmed with the degree of tourist development here. chaewang beach has alot in common with patong beach--phuket , pattaya and kuta beach in bali. previously pristine destinations that succumb to the virus of over-development. --enough said---
to get away from it all and enjoy samui , one has to stay in secluded resorts that cost a pretty penny . after much deliberation ( taking into account the many reviews on travel advisor ) we chose sala samui!
first the negatives:
the garden pool villa is way way too small! we had two bags with us and could barely find closet space and other space to put our belongings away. the idea of an outdoor shower --conceptually great --but falls flat on it's face when accosted by mosquitoes --and believe me , mosquitoes are a PROBLEM!! outdoor shower at the four seasons in ubud and jimbaran bay, bali work well as there was no mosquito problem. we splurged on the private pool and used it twice in 5 days!! there is only so many times one can douse oneself with mosquito repellant and feel romantic with your partner!! the outdoor toilet is WRONG on many different levels --i will leave it at that. the beach area is small ( so if you want to take long walks on the beach ---forget it! ). additionally, the beach is rocky a few feet into the water ( a person cut himself on the rocks just this morning ). to get anywhere from here costs about 300-400 baht. for us that works out to approx. an additional US $ 20 ( return trip ) everytime we wanted to eat outside the resort. why taxis are so overpriced is beyond belief.
now for the positives:
the staff at sala samui ( and i mean ALL of them ) are superb! maybe it is a manifestation of the thai character --but their GENUINE desire to provide service of the highest order in something that the american hospitality industry cannot even aspire to ( maybe too broad and sweeping a statement ). breakfast is excellent --a la carte is better than a buffet ( i think ) that has items sitting in the sweltering heat for quite some time.
we ate at several restaurants , and a coupla days ago had thai dinner at the sala samui restaurant ---one simple word --EXCELLENT!! genuine delicately balanced thai flavours from a chef who knows his craft. so much so, our last night tonight we will dine in house for the thai dinner and show.
i would give this place high marks for the above, but the negatives make our feelings ambivalent about this place.
activities--we went kayaking at the nearby marine park. long day and tiring. unfortunately we could not help comparing this experience to ha-long bay in vietnam, thus fell short of expectations
took a cooking class at SITCA --the BEST cooking class we have ever taken when compared to all the destination cooking classes we have experienced. if you are interested in learning about thai food --do not miss this.
for a spa experience we went to MAGNOLIA SPA for a 2 hr couples massage and facial treatment for my wife. cost us US $ 110 for both. a memorable experience --and reasonable indeed!
hope all of the above is helpful.

My husband and I have just returned from a blissful week at Sala Samui so wanted to add our comments to the great reviews that we enjoyed reading before we decided to book! I can't think of any negatives about this place, great rooms, fabulous pool, beautiful beach, delightful friendly staff/ service, lovely food ( Try the Tom Yum Seafood soup) cool cocktails and great relaxing atmosphere.
If you are looking for crazy nightlife then Choeng Mon may not be the resort for you, but if you want laid back luxury, great food and friendly unobtrusive service then Sala samui is a perfect choice.

Sala Samui is a beautiful relaxing place where one can really enjoy holiday. The pool area is exceptionally well designed and even if the beach in the front of the hotel is not of the best quality in Samui (some sharp rocks and very shallow water without possibility of real snorkeling) we considered also the hotel seaside very nice. Especially round beach beds with sun cupolas are very comfortable.

We stayed in a Deluxe Balcony room and felt, after comparing it to a Garden Pool Villa, that it has very good price/quality value. As the two hotel pools are so great, we liked to stay rather in the pool area than in a small own pool with high fence. In any case all accommodation choices seem to be good at Sala Samui.

During our stay we ordered custom-made shirts from a nearby tailor shop named Saville Row (kept by a family firm with Indian origins) and can recommend their kind services.

For those who afraid the stories about bloodthirsty mosquitoes: I saw only one mosquito during the week and the hotel has indeed taken all necessary actions to repel these little guys for being real bother.

As a conclusion, Sala Samui is a fabulous holiday resort. Please note, however, that if you are trying to find especial tranquil, for example a honeymoon destination, you might nonetheless want to consider some more secluded resort (like resorts in Maldives) as Sala Samui (like all resorts in Ko Samui) is after all situated in the middle of a rather crowded touristic area.

We have just returned from our first visit to Sala Samui. It will not be our last. Quite simply we loved it. The location, the staff, the privacy. It was everything we were looking for. We took the half day organised tour of the island. Our guide was knowledgable and enthusiastic about the island and very keen to give us a flavour of it. We thought it was excellent value. We stayed in one of the SALA Villas. The pool was all we could wish for and larger than we were expecting.
We really had no complaints at all and would recommend it to anyone seeking a lovely peaceful location to unwind and chill out.
We are already saving for our next visit.

My fiance and I stayed at Sala Samui for the last 4 nights of our 15 day Thailand excursion. The resort was beautiful, the grounds were well manicured and peaceful. We stayed in a Garden Suite and our room itself was much smaller than we expected (the bed took up the entire room) and the outdoor bathroom was a bit quirky. Interesting, but a little unsettling if you have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night for instance.

Overall the service was good -- the drivers in particular were very friendly and informative. We did run into a slight hiccup when we called for a pickup from the airport upon arrival, had to wait 30 minutes to be picked up and were then informed upon arrival that what we thought was a complimentary pickup (the ride is about 15 mins) would actually be costing us 700BHT (an immediate taxi at the airport would have cost us $400BHT). Anyway, after voicing some frustration, the front desk clerk agreed to charge the same rate as the taxi for the hotel car pickup.

All in all, Sala was a great place to park in a comfy beach recliner and do absolutely nothing. I would stay there in the future; however, I might check out some less expensive (we paid over $300USD/night) and higher rated options first.
