“Worth it for the food alone.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 January 2012

Had a few nights here at Christmas. We'd dined here previously, so knew the food was good. There's a bar, with separate restaurant / comfy sofas at the other side. The food is varied and very good throughout the menu.

The good-sized room was very comfortable, with everything you need in there, including a large bed. If there was a downside, it was the dated, but clean bathroom, which was just about functional, but no more. Given the stays aren't exactly cheap, this really needs addressing.

As our room was at end of the building, there was minimal noise from the busy downstairs. And though we were on the 'main street', we weren't bothered by excess traffic either.

There is a separate entrance for guests, with a part-time reception - there's not enough trade for someone to be on hand 24/7. But, the very pleasant staff are easy enough to find if you need something.

The place in general is vibrant, with a good mix of customers, and despite it being in a 'village', there were no 'idiots' to spoil things.

We chose this place due to its location for where we wanted to be, and will likely return at some point, as there's no need looking for anywhere else.

Room Tip: Room 'one' has to be one of the quietest, easy access as well.

Stayed here a few times on business so then decided to go for a 1 night stay to see some friends who live close by, was amazed they even take dogs!! so we took ours along and it was a great stay.
Nice rooms, good food, nice drinking place and can take the 4 legged friend along!! what more can you ask.

My wife and I paid an impromptu visit to the hotel on Sunday morning, hoping to get some breakfast (we arrived at approximately 9:30am)

I had only once before been to Harlestone, having diverted off the A143 to get some cash. It was then I noticed and admired the Hotel, set in what I feel is a very attractive market town, although we did not then venture into the premises.

We were on Sunday returning from our Caravan at Burgh Castle, and we decided to give the hotel a try, not knowing whether they were open, served non-residents, or, in fact, any good.

We were welcomed by a very nice Scottish Lady who showed us to one of the dining tables. We were immediately impressed with the decor and general demeanour of the place.
We were quickly served coffee and tea – both were of the highest quality

The waitress then asked, our having decided on the Full English, whether we wanted the small breakfast for £ 4.95, or the large for (I think) £ 7.95. My wife and I both opted for the small breakfast

I KID YOU NOT !! The breakfast was fantastic !! The bacon and sausage were obviously locally sourced and of the highest quality. The egg cooked to perfection, along with everything else. My wife and I agreed we had not enjoyed a breakfast so much for a very long time.

WELL DONE !!!

We will be recommending the hotel to everyone and will be back soon

After 2 bad experiences (service very, very slow and waitresses ignoring you), we thought to give it another go.We didn't order any starter this time. We waited 50 minutes for our main courses, and there were only 2 tables in the restaurant. JD Young is our local pub/restaurant, the long wait and bad service did put us off.

I guess will have to go and spend the money somewhere else.
Don't bother to there for a meal!!!

Last time I visited J.d. Young hotel it was just for a Sunday Lunch celebrating my Dads birthday and we thought everything was lovely. Good food especially the Roasts and the Puddings and the service was superb as always. I've stayed here many times as well and the rooms are full of character and have extremely comfortable beds from what I remember.

Visited the restaurant at J D Youngs for my birthday. Very disappointed. Perhaps it was a bad choice but two ladies ordered duck stir fry and could not eat it. It was really spicy and full of chilli which was not mentioned in the menu. We had to send it back. We ordered gammon steak instead but this was so salty and tough that it also was inedible. The creme brulee was runny. The two men had steaks which were very tasty but the plates were so overloaded with chips in a quite unnecessary way. We would not go back.
