“Awesome Experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

We spent our first night in Belize at the zoo and it was such a great adventure! We stayed in one of the pond houses which was so cool. It's rustic for sure but we went to Belize for an adventure. It has a comfortable bed, a bathroom, fans and a screened in porch where you can sit and listen to all of the critters at night. What more can you ask for?!?! They also picked us up from the airport and brought us up to San Ignacio when we were done at the zoo for less than any other place I found online. It was the perfect start to our trip and a great way to fit in the zoo while breaking up all of our travel a little.

We stayed for one night in a two person cabana and did the night tour while there. The cabana was really clean, had electricity and had a luxury camping feel. Dinner and breakfast were great and cooked by friendly locals. It's mostly veterinary volunteers but they are all friendly and create a camp ground atmosphere. They will drive you to and from the zoo whenever you like. Was amazing to be in the middle of the jungle and the night tour was absolutely amazing. If you're heading to the zoo, this is the way to see it!!

We had a morning flight from Hopkins and had heard of problems with travelers arriving in under 2 hours and we heard from another traveler about the uniqueness & convenience of staying at the Belize Zoo. Well, if you stay at the Zoo, you MUST make sure you get on the Night Tour of the Zoo-- it was Soooooooo worth it!! Ada welcomed us and made sure the next day we were pleased with our stay. Now that's hospitality!

For 2, we were given Pond House 2 which had a Queen bed, double bed and twin bed, indoor plumbing, kitchenette, screened porch and ceiling fans, plus night tour = $112.50US. View of crockadiles, turtles, colorful birds & the "music" of the jungle at night = FREE.

We were there at the beginning of rainy season, so it was very warm even with fans. Sheets on bed were a funny fabric that only made it hotter. Watch out for the mini-ants, you can't feel them, but they leave little bites.

Meals were family style and we were there with a group of teenagers wrapping up their week at the Zoo Lodge. Food was plentiful and tasty. Not fancy, but Morell (cook) definitely aimed to please. Their online reservation asks for dietary restrictions and while we have none, my husband doesn't care for beans. They actually posted a note on their kitchen message board that read "Marie's husband prefers NO BEANS" and highlighted it! LOL! Morell made him a delicious tamale!

The Night Zoo Adventure was the real draw and a bargain at $15US p/p. We arrived at 3pm and didn't think we needed to see the Belize Zoo in daylight since we have the #1 Zoo in the world in our backyard: the San Diego Zoo & Safari Park (used to be Wild Animal Park). But after going on the night adventure we wished we had seen the zoo during the day. We fed a Tapir, got up close with an Ocelot & Margay cats, riled up a pack of Peckaries, hooted with a spotted Owl, woke up the Howler monkeys (which by the way sound like the sounds used for the dinosaurs in "Jurassic Park" movies) and TOUCHED a jaguar paw/claws. The Jaguar encounter was worth every effort and penny to experience it!

No A/C so it was humid! Bring LOTS of bug spray. But so worth it!

Room Tip: Pond Houses = private bath. Don't forget bug spray!

We stayed for one night on the way to Cayo to do a night tour at the Zoo and loved it! We had Pond House 1 which was simple, clean and spacious. The fans meant we had a good nights sleep, and there is drinking water in the room. The grounds are well maintained and there are walking trails you can do around the site. The pond was more of a puddle when we were there, but we still saw lots of birds, lizards, a few agoutis, a snake and a poisonous toad(!). We loved the food (breakfast and dinner) - typical Belizean and very tasty. The night tour of the Zoo is a must, make time for it if you're planning a trip to Belize! A great value jungle experience.

We stayed in a Pond House for 1 night. The house was great, very rustic but very large and overlooking a pond where we saw all types of birds and even crocodiles. The house had 3 twin beds and a full size bed. There is a small kitchenette with refrigerator, sink and coffee maker. Unfortunately, they were having problems with the water in our unit so we did not have a working shower until we were checking out... but we just ignored the inconveniences and enjoyed the experience. Don't expect anything fancy, and don't be surprised if you see some bugs in the room.... but well worth the experience to stay at the zoo and definitely go on the nocturnal night tour!

My family had one night free before our booking at Ian Anderson's Caves Branch. I did not want to stay in Belize City and was looking for an affordable accommodation on the way to Caves Branch. We stayed in a Pond House and loved it! Rustic but all we needed with our screened porch and small kitchenette (handy for cooling beverages and nice for a longer stay.) Indoor bathroom very adequate and our son had a sleeping room separated from ours by the kitchen area. No AC but the fans were just fine. The birds around the Pond House were lovely to watch. The food was delicious and the staff friendly and helpful. We had a night tour of the Zoo and returned the next morning to experience the Zoo in the daylight. Not a fancy place but a wonderful experience for our first night in Belize!

Room Tip: The Pond Houses are a bit larger however the other accommodations looked very nice as well.

Live out your 19th Century explorer fantasies at this place. Our 'Pond House' was set right on a pond with great birding and tons of privacy. The night sounds from the surrounding wildlife were amazing. The screened in porch in the morning - very peaceful. They provide a hotplate, small kitchen with dinnerware, and coffeemaker stocked with coffee - hooray! I never did figure out how to use the shower without flooding the bathroom, but overall you cannot beat the ambiance and the value.

It is not quite easy walking distance to the Zoo itself but the staff are happy to drive you back and forth. Do the night tour! They even arranged transport to the airport for me. Food is basic but very tasty tipico meals.

My 11-year old daughter loved this place and wanted to know why we did not stay there longer. Great for the wildlife adventure experience.
