Marathon is out of your way if you are visiting Athens. I would not suggest it if you are visiting Athens for just a couple of days. If you are a resident though, you definitely need to see the Museum.
The exhibits include neolithic findings, urns from the geometrical era, egytian deities (good for young children to understand the differences between ancient Greek and ancient Egyptian style in sculptures).
The visit to the Museum and the batllefield can be combined with a visit to the famous Marathon beach (sandy long beach with swallow water).
