I've stayed in a lot of hostels, but never one this bad. The whole hostel, from the streets, the lift to the bedroom and bathroom feels like a horror movie set. No joke, the bathrooms looked like the set from the first saw film.

Agreed the location is great to get to the main sites but to get to them you must first pass the red light district. Which did provide some entertainment watching the prostitutes from the dorms.

There's a lot of bad things with the hostel and whilst I always take reviews with a pinch of salt, when reading back over the positive reviews, they all sound like they're written by the same person.

100% not recommended for girls and guys travelling alone (there were 12 of us and we were freaked).

Very basic hotel, you get what you pay for, but be warned, you're in the centre of the red light district & Ormonia metro station is crawling with pick pockets. Although the sheets & room were clean, the air conditioning worked & there was hot water, as long as you didn't mind the sewage smell coming up the drains in the bathroom. You might also make friends with the cockroaches in the dining room.
Having said that, the wifi is free, the staff are polite & friendly & it was quiet & appeared secure when doors were double locked.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing on to the street or all you get is a view of a brick wall.

Arrived after a long day of travel to find out they had given our room away because they had tried to get payment four days prior, but it declined because my card number had changed. I had already put a deposit down on the room and on the confirmation form through hostelbookers it said pay remaining balance upon arrival, so this shouldn't have happened and I will be notifying hostelbookers about this.
We should have taken this as a sign, but at the time I was a bit stressed and we also had another night booked here for the end of our trip, so we decided to pay it in advance so this didn't happen again.
The lady on reception said the amount for the twin room was wrong on the hostelbookers website and was reluctant to let us have the room at the lower price
stated on our confirmation form, but in the end she did.
Since they had given our room away, they said they would ring up another hotel and organise a room for us, which we thought was very helpful and kind. We waited until the person from the other hotel arrived and walked us to Hotel Argo. The hotel smelt bad and once we saw the room, we knew we had to find our own accommodation as it was horrendous. So not only did they give our room away, but they hooked us up with worst room we had even seen. Luckily for us we got a refund from Hotel Argo and found a lovely hotel room 2 mins away.
Thanks for nothing Athens House Hostel!
We've prepaid for a room with you at the end of our trip, but you can shove it! I'd rather spend more money and stay somewhere with better service!!

Stayed there for three nights, 2 of them on the lobby floor cuz the hostel was overbooked. Was nice that I only had to pay 5€ for the nights on the floor but still, LOADS OF BEDBUGS! The owner is a sometimes friendly, but very strange guy! I wouldn't visit this hostel again!

Pros - affordable, good location, not strict on check out, each bed has its own fan.
Cons - staff don't give you any assistance (they don't even have maps), lobby smells like cigarette smoke, shower room is always flooded.
I wouldn't stay here again if I came back to Athens but if all you need is a bed then this could do the trick.

I had an excellent few days here. The staff were very friendly and easy to get along with. The hostel was kept very clean all the time. It is an easy walk down to the main touristy part of Athens. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

dark and grimm, scarry host, does not care about anything, you have to pay for a towel. Full of bed buggs or something else that bites me. We can't cancel. Cigaret smoke everywhere and smell like dumpsters. No good reason to stay there, did i mentioned bed buggs?!
