“Lots of history! more should be done restore it...”
Reviewed 12 July 2011

After a day of visiting the acropolis, our family stopped in at the ancient agora, the market or social centre of ancient Athens. There was plenty to see here. An old church plenty of ruined buildings made of primitive bricks and many more.

you should definitely see the reconstruction of one of the buildings in the agora. It is quite big and shows how the greek buildings looked with the colour on them.
After visiting that you should make your down, or should I say up, to the temple of Hephaestus the god of forgery, fire, and craftsmanship. The temple was very well preserved but some of it was blackened and needs to be restored.
as a matter of fact, this was an unfinished temple. The frieze on the walls is only partially completed.

The agora is a must-see after the acropolis!

“Final visit of the ruins, don't miss”
Reviewed 30 June 2011

We viewed the Agora from the Acropolis and decided that we wanted to visit. It was well worth the walk. You could almost imagine how the citizens of ancient Athens lived in this area. Lots of spots where you can stand or sit in the shade and enjoy the ancient site. Allow yourself enough time to appreciate the ruins.

“Give yourself plenty of time as there is A LOT to see”
Reviewed 10 June 2011

Make sure you have not given yourself a time budget to see this site as there is an awful lot to see. Wander round and absorb the info boards and when you get a bit too hot take a break in the air conditioned museum on the site.

“Don't miss the site of the ancient Agora”
Reviewed 1 June 2011

You will need plenty of time to do justice to this fascinating site. The Stoa of Attalos and the Museum of the Ancient Agora offer a welcome retreat from the relentless Athens sunshine. The museum has plenty of significant exhibits.Walk around the site to the Temple of Hephaistus which is quite charming.

“Ancient Athens at its best”
Reviewed 11 January 2011

When I travelled to Athens, I was excited to be visiting the Akropolis. It did not disappoint! However, as I made my way down to the base of the Akropolis and into the Ancient Agora, I was struck by the beauty of this place. It didn't take much to imagine what life must have been like in this central marketplace! The ruins are well marked and there are benches placed here and there so you can rest in a shady spot under old olive trees.

The Agora is not nearly as busy as the Akropolis. In fact, I think most tourists miss this wonderful place. The Temple of Hephaistos is remarkable and you can get quite close to it. The details on this temple are right there for you to see. Across the Agora is the Stoa of Attalos. There is a small museum inside with plenty of information. You will be amazed at the sheer size of this building and once again, you'll be able to easily imagine life here in ancient times.

As you make your way through the Agora, keep in mind the number of sandalled feet that crossed these very stones thousands of years ago. It is a most impressive place and is not to be missed if you want to experience old Athens. Go!!! The entrance fee is included in the general ticket you purchase at the Akropolis.
