We stopped at Athens while on a cruise and decided to get the X80 bus from the port to near the Acropolis and then paid (after a joining a short line) to enter - as we were a party of one adult; one 65+; two teenagers cost of entry was low (the 65+ person had to produce evidence of age and a UK driving licence was adequate). We climbed up the steps to the top -stopping along the way to admire the views and it was worth it for a short while but quite busy as tours had arrived by now.
We descended and had ice cold lemonade that actually cost us more than the entry fee.
