Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

This is a beautiful private museum located half way between Syntagma Square and the exclusive Kolonaki district.

It is worth spending some time looking at the exhibits that are well laid out and cover most of the periods of Greece but focus on the period of Byzantium, Ottoman occupation and the subsequent liberation of Greece.

There is also a lovely restaurant/cafe with nice views of Athens as well as a gift shop that has very interesting and unusual gifts that you won't find in Plaka or the other tourist areas.

This museum is in what looks like a large home. It is a leisurly walk through time with unbelievably historic items to view. There is also a good restaurant for a lunch on the 3rd floor.

Has holdings from the Archaic period through the 20th century, well-curated with excellent descriptions in several languages. Great restaurant/cafe. And really fine museum shop. Wonderful collection of traditional Greek clothing, on mannequins.

I've lived in Athens for over 4 years and I had never visited the place, and I really don't know why. So one day, I decided to pay a visit. It is an archeological, Byzantine and folk museum and a gallery combined. The exhibits are in chronological order starting from about 2600BC leading up to about 1940. Every room is numbered you so you don't lose the flow of the timeline. We spent about two hours in there and we had a great time. The best exhibits in my opinion were some byzantine books and maps of Europe that really blow me away!
