Owner description: The Benaki Museum was founded in 1930 by Antonis Benakis and presents the historical and cultural development of the Greek nation. Through its extensive collections that cover several different cultural fields –from the age of Roman domination to the medieval Byzantine period and from the fall of Constantinople to the struggle for Greek independence in 1821- the Benaki Museum is perhaps the sole instance of a complex structure within the broader network of museum foundations in Greece.

“Nice location”
Reviewed 28 August 2014

The villa housing this museum is a good place to hide from the heat. The collections are easily approachable and the cafeteria is good, serving also food. The historical relevance of the collection, which comprises a lot of jewellery, doesn't match e.g. the national archaeological museum.

“Check opening times”
Reviewed 25 August 2014 via mobile

A magnificent building from the glimpses we could get from the shop off the foyer. Unfortunately, the museum is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. I did try to check in advance but this was different to the information I obtained. A reminder to check locally wherever possible. The building itself was worth a visit and I would go back again should we visit Athens in the future.

“Well Worth Visiting”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

Exquisite pieces of art and Greek history are displayed in this lovely mansion, the former home of the Benaki family. The journey through the museum follows a timeline and it can easily take 2 hours or more to complete. We found the various period costumes and artifacts from the 1821 War of Independence especially interesting. The cafe opens up onto a wide terrace and should be visited for a nice coffee break, and by the way,the butter croissant was surprisingly excellent.
The admission fee is reasonable and offers great value for the money.

“Our favorite museum in Athens”
Reviewed 21 August 2014

You get it all here from ancient to near modern, in a compact, well laid out old mansion. Love the Byzantine icons, among many treasures.
The cafe with view balcony is superb. Museum is free on Thursdays. No charge to just have lunch or drinks in the cafe.

“Very good and informative.”
Reviewed 18 August 2014

Very nice museum, outlining the history of Greece, in a nice building. It is also very cheap (free for under 21s!). The restaurant is also very nice. In my opinion it could be more interesting if it had more media/interactive pieces, as one could get engaged with the Greek history more this way.
