This hotel has a great location: right next to Constitution Square with views of the Acropolis. When we arrived the staff was warm and welcoming. We were taken to a lovely room and our bags arrived quickly. Our room was not huge but it was a good size for Greece and we had a view of both Constitution Square and the Acropolis from our small balcony. The bed was comfortable and the marble bathroom was beautiful though the shower was small. We had hoped to go swimming but the pool was small and all the seats in the shade were taken. We had dinner at the rooftop restaurant with a great view of the city and the Acropolis. The food was fine but not outstanding. We were just there one night and the hotel was great for us.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Constitution Square and the Acropolis.

We arrived at the Hotel Grande Bretagne after an 8 hour ferry trip from Amorgos that began at 7am, so we were looking forward to the luxury and pampering that the hotel promised. The hotel was indeed impressive and opulent but the greeting at reception felt cold and rehearsed rather than warm and friendly like we had experienced elsewhere in Greece. Having said that, staff at the spa were very nice as was the facility itself. Location is perfect for sightseeing and for departure for the airport.

Huge check in lines, followed by tiny rooms made me feel more like I landed in Vegas, not Athens. Even though I booked a "deluxe" room, the room they gave me...with a view of the building across the street, was teeny. After complaining, they gave me a non view room of the inside courtyard, which was at least larger. I think this hotel gets all the cruise ship pre and post business, thus they offer very discounted rates for those people and is packed at all times. I would look elsewhere. The spa, while highly touted, is just ok. The rooftop pool is tiny, but pretty nice. Breakfast buffet is fine, nothing outstanding....except the view.

We stayed at the Grand Bretagne last September and had a wonderful stay. The location is ideal, although being directly across from the Parliament building you can expect some protests if your trip coincides with any incidents. The hotel is beautiful, especially for Athens. The lobby is spacious and very nicely decorated. The rooms are comfortable. The restuarant on the roof is great. I thought the food was very good and the view is priceless. The staff was very attentive and personal which was nice. Too often you feel like a number rather than a guest at such large hotels.

The only downside was the lack of lounge chairs at the pool. The pool on the roof can get very crowded in the afternoon and chairs are hard to come by.

A lot has been mentioned from other reviews on the cost. While expensive it is reasonable compared to other European grand hotels. Also, Athens can be very crowded and dirty and the Grande Bretagne is an oasis well worth the cost. The only thing expensive is the beer. Expect to pay 13 euros for a cold one after a long day of sightseeing!

Room Tip: We stayed in a basic room which was fine and spacious relative to other European city hotel rooms.

Our visit to Athens and this incredible hotel was just before the troubles began in Greece {stayed in October of 2010}. This stop was part of our four island adventure, with the stay at the Grande Bretagne being the first stop.
The words luxury and attention to detail is an understatement. The rooms are elegantly decorated with many small but important features that make a guest stay that much more pleasant {auto light switches for entering and leaving the room is a great 'green' and security feature}.
The highlight of our stay was having dinner several nights on the open air restaurant that overlooks the Acropolis. The food and wine was wonderful and the view was the most memorable. The hotel and restaurant are both elegant, and I was happy that it gave me the chance to dress elegantly for dinner {something I enjoy}. Breakfast at the open air restaurant is not to be missed......... wonderful view and a healthy variety of options.
Attention from the staff was warm and welcoming, yet they maintained a level expected of a luxury hotel. Everything is within walking distance - or via the very clean and modern subway. We hired a guide to take us to some of the sites all within walking/subway ride distance {so worth it}. Don't miss the changing of the guards.
Hotel pricing is appropriate - this is a top luxury hotel.

We were there before all the problems arose, but this hotel was one of the finest we've ever stayed in. It is located on one side of the Syntagma Square, directly across from the Parliament building, so caveat emptor nowadays.

This is a classic hotel, and first-class in every way. The rooms were ample in size, well-maintained, and very clean. The restaurant on the roof, while offering spectacular views of the Parthenon, had only average food, so I would recommend going there for drinks, and then opt for dinner somewhere else.

The location is about as good as I can imagine--near a multitude of restaurants, shopping, and a host of other things to do. Ours was a great experience there.

The location of the hotel was superb. Our 7th floor room overlooked Syntagma Square and had a view of the Acropolis. Most of the major sites, including the Acropolis, were within walking distance, weather permitting (it was 40degrees while we were there). The rooms were well maintained, albeit dim, and the roof top restaurant where breakfast was served, again had a fantastic view of the Acropolis.

We had one hiccup at the end of our stay. The driver, organized by the hotel, who took us around town the previous day, offered to take us to the airport on our departure day. The flat rate to the airport is 35 euros. He billed us through the hotel for 48 euros and when we inquired, we were told it was because we were being driven specially in a Mercedes and many taxis are not Mercedes and will "not have aircon, have their windows rolled down...". We didn't see any of this during our two day stay in Athens, and many of the taxis waiting outside the hotel were Mercedes. My husband asked a second receptionist about the charge and this time the reply was that the driver had told the butler that he was taking us to several different places before taking us to the airport. The butler did not inform or confirm this with us and we came away questioning the integrity of the hotel staff and wondering whether they were safeguarding the interests of their guests. For this reason, fours stars only from us.

Note that the Greek restaurant in the hotel is only open Monday to Friday. And the pool in the afternoon is crowded so don't count on cooling down there after sightseeing in the morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Acropolis.
