“Too high expectations?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 March 2014

I think my problem with this hotel was that I had too high expectations?

I stayed here for one night earlier in March. The location is a major asset - right there on Syntagma Square.

As a SPG platinum member I was upgraded to a Deluxe Suite (used SNA), it was a smallish suite, with a sliding door between the living area and the bedroom. The suite was nicely decorated, but the tv-sets were old and small. I think these models were the first LCD-tvs around, with big grey frames and speakers on the sides (hehe). Not very proper for a hotel of this calibre. There was a TV in the bathroom, but it did not work at all. It is not a must to have tvs in the bathroom, but if they do it should work at least. Again, not very proper for a hotel of this calibre. For 300 EUR ++++++++ this is not acceptable. The suite was very comfortable otherwise.

The common areas of the hotel was very beautiful - the bar is magnificent and must be visited. I had some food in the lobby restaurant, but the food was rather plain and not very impressive - the feta cheese was very dry and the meat was tough. Again, dissappointment.

In the basement there is a spa. This is a great place to spend a couple of hours. The changing rooms are wonderful - with completely private showers and Molton Brown amenities (just like in the suites). The pool was wonderful, but my favourite was the many steam rooms - haman, roman bath, steam room, etc, etc...absolutely fantastic.

Great staff in every corner of the hotel.

Great hotel, but needs to put a little more attention to the smaller details.

With probably one of the best locations in Athens this hotel was an absolute delight. I was staying there for a conference I was participating in. Blackout curtains and a wonderfully comfortable bed ensured I slept like a log for the three nights of my stay. Superbly appointed rooms and bathrooms with a great shower. Small but functional gym with enough free weights to make it decent. The restaurant/bar on the top floor has a stunning view of the Akropolis. I was gobsmacked when I went up there for breakfast on my first day having arrived in the middle of the night. At night the terrace transformed into a nice bar. A hotel that has managed to maintain old world 'grandeur' whilst ensuring that everything functions at the highest levels for a great modern hotel.

I lived in Athens for a few months, went to Hotel Grande Bretagne for 1 week on christmas. Best decision ever made, the spa is simply gorgeous with the 5 different steam baths ! The location is awesome, just on Syntagma square !

Just spent four nights in a deluxe room here. Had oblique view of parliament which was good to watch the changing of the guards and occassional protest march ! However, not good if you are a light sleeper as traffic noise in constant, despite double glazing. Ear plugs were effective though. Room did not feel very 'deluxe', unlike the rest of the hotel but we paid a keen price through a third party consolidator so it was more than adequate and still a thrill to be a guest here. It was a smallish room however, with nowhere to sit and relax and rather sparse and masculine in design but in very good condition. Tech was disappointing too - first generation flat screen TV with lousy reception, not that we wanted to spend time watching TV. Bathroom was however, magnificent with plenty of large soft towels, loads of toiletries and top quality fittings. Shower stall was not very generous in size but the shower itself was very good.

Beds were comfortable with soft linens and feather pillows. The linens were changed everyday despite leaving the green credentials card on the bed to say we'd be happy to use the linens again - why bother having this in the first place. There was a genuine turn down service every evening too - with water and chocolates left.

Sound proofing of the room did leave a lot to be desired - the man next door could be heard very clearly talking on the phone - he could have been in the room with us. I think the connecting door was only a single leaf or very poorly sealed.

Breakfast was extensive and sitting in the warn sunshine on the terrace with the Acropolis in sight was a thrill.

There were plenty of staff around the hotel. The junior restaurant staff were a little haphazard in their service but very friendly. We found some of the senior staff a little lacking in warmth, especially on the front desk and in the restaurant. One concierge was a little terse but the others we came into contact with (and there appeared quite a few different ones) were charming and very helpful. The doormen, again many different ones, were either totally disinterested (chatting to dubiuous looking characters) or all over us like a rash !

Hotel location was faultless with sights, shops and transport connections close by or on the doorstep.

We never used the spa or other facilities but did have dinner in the restaurant, again with the magical Acropolis views at night. Food and service were excellent - different crew to breakfast service and it was busy and animated (mainly business people) and not outrageously expensive either as one might imagine.

One tip - beware dishonest Athenian taxi drivers ! It is true what the guides and travel blogs say. We got scammed and ended up paying 35 euros for a short cross town trip that should have cost only about 5 euros. Have to say though it was impressive - the speed and technique of how we, experienced travellers, were well and truly fleeced - a tale to tell !

I returned to this hotel and must have lost my mind on the way. I did not call and insist on a room with a view. Instead I looked at the court yard I could have been anywhere there was no feel for the city just a room ~ big mistake. My last visit was wonderful with views of the ancient sites a balcony and the look and feel of everything that is good about Athens. I tried to change at check in to a smaller room with a view but with little success. Nice enough hotel but with a view a fabulous hotel. Otherwise staff were helpful and nice but the gimmicky butler was more of a hindrance than a help.

Stayed at the Hotel Grande Bretagne for three nights at a suite overlooking Syntagma Square with a view of the Acropolis.
Pros:
• Superb service across the board (pre-arrival guest services, butlers, housekeeping, staff at the spa) that is very proactive and detail-oriented. They anticipate your needs without you having to ask. For example, our butler arranged for us to have breakfast boxes the day of our early morning flight as we were going to miss breakfast.
• Complimentary breakfast in the rooftop restaurant provides astounding views of the Acropolis
• Hotel location is very convenient and a short and easy walk to all major sites and great eateries
• Our room was stately and classical, but also got good sunlight and the use of mirrors lent a lightness to it (I’ve stayed in other hotels where stately meant old, drab, dark and depressing)
• Complimentary access to the gym and the spa pool. Robes and slippers provided for use in the locker room.
No cons, except to say that the hotel is indeed very $$$$
Additional comments: Staying in a room that overlooks Syntagma Square and the sound from all the activity keeps you feeling like you are still ‘part of the action’ even when you are in your hotel room (perhaps napping to get over jetlag!). If budget is a concern, I’d recommend forgoing the view of the Acropolis as you’ll have other opportunities to see/explore the Acropolis, and there are lots of restaurants that offer great views while you dine. It was a true treat, however, to be able to peer out of our hotel room or walk onto our terrace and see the Acropolis at any time of the day, especially in the moonlight.

Look no further than Hotel Grande Bretagne for sheer opulence, luxury, superb service and heavenly comfort. This hotel is a jewel. Our room was fit for royalty and we were able to observe the changing of the guard, across the street, from our very own private balcony. The food is excellent, whether enjoyed in one of the hotel's 5 star restaurants or in the comfort and privacy of your room. Staying in this hotel is an experience unto itself. Don't miss out!!
