Ok, so to be honest the only reason that I agreed to go to Athens was because we were going to be very close (going to Hydra) and my daughter is a fan of mythology. I'd heard that Athens was dirty and grimy and not much fun to hang around, and that seems to be fairly accurate. However, the Hotel Grande Bretagne was a much-needed oasis in the city.
When you think of the features of a great European hotel, I expect a fantastic location, great property/amenities, and over-the-top service. The GB did not disappoint on any of these. From a location perspective, the GB has a perfect location and view of the Acropolis, the main attraction in Athens. The rooftop restaurant for a grand buffet breakfast with stunning views of the Acropolis and Parthenon is not to be missed. Yes it is a bit pricey, but do it anyway. The pool was a literal oasis after a hot day of sightseeing and the pool staff was sharp, professional, and courteous, despite having to deal with over-pampered jet-setters. For the record, we booked the GB on points, so we're not the "normal" guests. Finally, the service throughout the hotel was top-notch.
So if you find yourself going to Athens, do yourself a favor and splurge for the GB.More
