“Grand Stay”
Reviewed 21 July 2014

My husband and I stayed at The Grand Bretagne in June 2014 for 5 wonderful nights!
We loved this hotel! Rooms are elegant as well as the bathrooms.
Some of the additional enjoyable features are the rooftop pool and the fabulous top floor restaurant.
We had a terrific breakfast every morning overlooking the acropolis - ( big selections of Greek yogurts and honey) it is open air with more than a 180degree view of Athens. Just as beautiful is the view at night and suggest you enjoy drinks in the bar after sunset -
Great location walking distance to The Plaka where we walked for dinner every night and shopping options also are also very close- do not recommend eating at Strofi but do recommend eating at Daphene's - opa!

Room Tip: We split our trip in between Santorini one room was facing the parliament the other the courtyard bo...

We stayed 1 night at the Grande Bretagne as we were passing through from Istanbul to Santorini. Upon arrival, our booking with Bookings.com was not located by the hotel. We had to wait for nearly 1 hour for the desk clerk to identify the reservation and get us a room. This was frustrating.

The lobby and other amenities were incredible. I will brag about these shortly. However, I must address the room. The room was old, outdated, stale & dusty. I immediately took the comforter and threw it on the floor. There was no access to ice on our floor so we had to request ice from the front desk, which was annoying. The window / view was of another part of the hotel. ie. no view. I immediately thought we made a huge mistake.

Now once outside the room...

The rooftop bar / restaurant was delicious with a view that was worth more than the price of our dinner. View of the acropolis that you may not find elsewhere. (See my photos). The cigar bar was a pleasant escape for my boyfriend, where we also met several incredible new friends from all over the world. The gent working the bar in the cigar room was AMAZING and went above and beyond to ensure we were taken care of.

The pool on the roof was fantastic. As were the specialty mojitos. We enjoyed for a few hours before taking off to the airport.

Room Tip: Please ask for a room with a real view. Otherwise, you'll feel like you were in a closet like we...

Dear Guest,
Thank you for taking the time to write your comments after recently staying at the Hotel Grande Bretagne. We were disappointed to read that you didn’t enjoy the accommodation that so many of our guest praise. However, it was great to read that you had the opportunity to enjoy the service as well as the GB Roof Garden restaurant and its magical views of Athens and the Acropolis. We look forward to welcome you back in the future.

We stayed one night after 10 days in the Greek Islands.
We arrived at about 8 pm, and upon checking in we were asked if this was our 1st stay(it was not). When I asked about an upgrade for SPG Gold I was told that an upgrade was not available as the hotel was fully booked, which is fair and understandable. However, this comes into play later.

First the good. The hotel is very well located. The lobby is that of a grand old hotel. The breakfast in the rooftop garden restaurant was very good with an amazing view. The room that we had was small but the bathroom was huge .

Now the bad. We were in room 641. All night we heard the elevator going up and down. It is almost like we were staying in a room that was next to the elevator shaft or the elevator mechanical room. Needless to say, we did not get a good night sleep.

The next morning, when we were checking out and asked how I stay was, I told the front desk clerk about our experience and that the room was terrible. His first reaction was to say that we should have said something last night and they could have moved our room. When I told him that we were told that the hotel was fully booked, he said something like, oh yes, you are correct, we were fully booked last night. So why did he even bother to pretend that they could have done something when he knew that they couldn't have, other than to try to shift the blame to me. This is not 5 star treatment nor the type of customer service that one expects from a Luxury Collection hotel.

He said that they will make a note of my complaint and try to make it up next time. To me these words are just hollow feel good words , because when checking in they did not know that we had stayed at the hotel previously. I have no confidence that if we do decide to stay here again if we return to Athens, that they will have any records or will do anything. To me , the better course of action would have been to offer a goodwill discount for the night that we spent.

Would I stay at the hotel again? Maybe, for the reasons mentioned above under the good. However, if you are ever offered Room 641, and that is the only room available, go somewhere else.

I visited this hotel on my honeymoon. We only stayed two nights but loved this hotel mainly because of the restaurant. The views at the restaurant are 180 degrees almost of Athens including a clear view of the Acropolis. You can enjoy either during dinner or as part of the brunch and they are simply incredible. The pool is also very nice as well. The room had a nice terrace with a view of parliament and the location was ideal for shopping and very close in proximity to walk to the Acropolis.

GB is definitely a class of its own. I stayed there last week with my wife and 2 years old son. We were upgraded to a suite on one of their dedicated floors with butler service. The suite was huge with 2 x balconies and 2 x LCD TVs, one for the living room and the other for the bedroom. They had already placed a crib inside the room. It's location and proximity to all attractions within walking distance is impressive. They had evening turn down services. We had flower bouquet in our room (we celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary during our stay there) and fruit basket and mineral water replenished on daily basis. Lavish buffet breakfast was served at the roof top restaurant with stunning views of the Acropolis and the Parliament. My wife had to ask for hot water in a flask she carried to prepare milk for our son only the first day and the remaining days the restaurant staff just took it from her and refilled. They have friendly and courteous staff, always with a smile on their face, I'm sure they might be enjoying their jobs as much as we enjoyed our stay there! The guys at the concierge gave precise information, they were like a refined search engine. Exceptional service standards, renaissance architecture and luxury makes GB a class of its own. If you are planning to visit Athens, GB is the place to stay. We have memories we will cherish for a life time!

Room Tip: We stayed in suite on a dedicated butler service floor. If you look out of the balcony, you have stu...

We had booked this room for two nights at the beginning of the trip and one night at the end.
The complains: A very Grand old hotel, but like all of them this too had attitude problems. We booked a room which hotels.com showed could sleep 3 people, so obviously it would be big, but when we were given the room, it was tiny, there was literally little space to open our bags.
The second time around when we checked in the same category of rooms, surprisingly the room size was huge, though it was unserviced and dirty. They simply took the key back and offered another one without so much as an apology, which I found strange.. Then they forgot to give us turndown service at night.. for which we made sure they came and did it at 10pm at night.
Now for the good part:
The rooftop restaurant had breathtaking views of both the city as well as the acropolis, and the breakfast spread was one of the best I've seen.
The concierge team was very efficient and prompt, and extremely helpful.
The location was just perfect, right at the syntagma square and walkable from most places where you'd want to go in Athens. The underground metro station is just outside the hotel.
Only the lobby had free wi-fi, and the business center was complimentary.

Room Tip: Don't go for a good view, go for a good size..

Just the most gorgeous hotel we have stayed in! We came over to Athens for a wedding at this hotel, and loved being there.

The roof top has an amazing view and eating breakfast while staring at the acropolis was one of the highlights.

Out room was a decent size, although not a lot of room to store our 6 weeks traveling worth of luggage. Also no PowerPoint in the bathroom for anything other than a shaver - but we have found this in most places through Europe.

Will be coming here again.
