We trekked the streets to the vehicular to reach the monastery - a bit weird that you travel through solid rock and then appear at the highest point in Athens. The views are amazing but AVOID the tat tat selling men.

We took a cab here and had him wait for us to bring us back to the Plaka. The views of the city and the Acropolis are second to none. Well worth a little side trip to get here.

This place is amazing! A little ways up in the hills but our cab was only 8 euros. We didn't realize how isolated it was but thankfully the people working taking the tickets had a cell phone and were able to call us a cab back to the city, so you should have the cab wait for an hour or so and make a deal for 20 euros. They did this for us also to St George's mountain for 20 euros and waited 45 mins,on us. This place also has many hiking trails and climb up behind the monastery to a little chapel and see it. With lots of icons people have left and a little pool with koi in it. A little tougher climb but well worth it. The monastery itself was a terrific trip and amazing to see something that was a thousand years old and still I. Such great condition. The 3 person staff was wonderful and let us into the bathrooms and like I said saved us by calling us a return cab.

These are the remains of the monastery which is well restored for the tourists to enjoy and experience the place. The place is set a bit far and in a secluded place but at the same time surrounded by beautiful view and greenery. The travel to the place might take a bit time and can be a little strenuous but the ancient church and the monastery are well worth the effort.

This Monastery is well worth the short trek out of Central Athens. We visited one morning and were the only visitors there. Consequently, we were able to soak up the wonderful, peaceful and Holy atmosphere in this sacred site. The Chapel is absolutely delightful, a real gem. The reconstruction works give a really good sense of how it must have been for the monks living in the monastery. It only costs a few Euros to gain entry so definitely worth a visit. We didn't have time but there looked to be some lovely walks in the woods just outside the monastery.
