“Athens Hilton Greece”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 June 2012 via mobile

Hilton Athens, Greece.

June 16, 2012

Spent an overnight at the Hilton Athens on the way back to the USA and as all Hilton's are, it was very comfortable and the room has an open feeling with an opening terrace.
( ours had a view of the Acropolis )

It is in a great area near the Acropolis, not really walking distance but a Metpo ( metro ) or taxi ride away.

Bathrooms have a deep tub and separate shower with plenty of pressure and hot water for your enjoyment.

***Meals and room service are pricey €35.00 for breakfast buffet.

As always 100% Hilton

American Express, Visa and MasterCard are accepted.

Only a few words required to sum up the Hilton Athens: very convenient to get to from Airport - just take tube to Evangelistos and you're almost there. Great rooms (even though we didn't have a good view as we'd got a cheap room only deal) with very comfortable beds and large luxurious bathroom. Great swimming pool area and superb reception area with very good staff. If you don't have a business expense account then things like breakfast (31 euros for full breakfast), wi-fi (15 euros a day), a bottle of water (6.50 euros) were all extortionate. You could buy a bottle of water at the kiosk at the bus stop 100 yards from hotel for 1.50 euros. We did think, however, it was worth splashing out on cocktails and dinner in the rooftop Galaxy Bar with views to the Acropolis - just amazing and while expensive, it wasn't bad value.

I like to consider myself an "international traveler". I have traveled the world, visiting well over 15 countries, staying in tons of hotels from B&B to 5-stars. As I write this, I have just flew in from Athens staying at the Hilton. I cannot begin to put in words how excellent this hotel was. From cleanliness to the genuineness of the staff, Hilton Athens is world class in all aspects.

I highly recommend this hotel for all visiting Athens. It is close to the metro which is very easy to use and excellent restaurants.

Room Tip: We stayed in the executive suites. It has a lounge available that is well worth the money. The airpo...

+ Service was quickly delivered, check-in and out was fairly easy.
+ Location though not in the heart of tourist sites is within walking distance to Acropolis, Kolonaki, Mount Lycabettus and many museums.
+ Room was large and comfortable. We had no problem with our room that faces the main road although we can understand for a light sleeper the traffic noise can be a big minus.
+ Roof top bar has an excellent view of the Acropolis. Great night view.
+ Breakfast was good. A pleasant surprise that it has an Asian section where traditional Chinese congee and dim sum were available.
+ A big plus for us was the 25m outdoor pool and the fact that all the guests understood the etiquette of sticking to one's lane. Great for doing laps.
+ The business center was well run and the receptionist was helpful.

- There seems to be a number of hidden costs such as internet services, fee for operator to help make local calls and fee for using the indoor pool.

We'd still recommend this hotel for the pluses stated above.

The Hilton is well located for Athens (which is a very spread out city), an easy walk to the subway station, with many good restaurants nearby. It's about a 15-minute walk to the Kolonaki area, which has some nice restaurants, cafes and shops. Additionally, it's a short cab ride to the Acropolis and Plaka.

The rooms are ok; decent size, though my bathroom was oddly shaped and very narrow. Noise is going to be an issue almost any side you face, as the windows are not thick enough to block out the sounds of traffic on one side, or the disco playing music into the wee hours on another. Also sound coming from the hallways is easy to hear in the rooms, which was especially annoying on the nights with partying teenagers mingling in the hallways until 4am (and security doing nothing to stop them). The bed, pillows and bedding were ok, nothing special. The towels are terrible, unless you want to exfoliate.

The gym is excellent, though they charge 12 EUR a day to use it (we had this included in our room rate), and sell memberships so it's fairly crowded at peak times. The pool area is huge with many comfortable sun loungers, and there's a nice indoor pool as well.

One of the huge downsides of the Hilton is the extra charges. The room rate is reasonable, but anything else will cost a fortune. A bottle of water? That's 6.20. Washing underpants? 7.40. And eating or drinking anything at the hotel restaurants is ludicrously expensive. A cappuccino is 7.50. A burger is 25 or 28 (depending on which restaurant). And that's all in Euros. I must say the quality of the food is good -- especially at the rooftop restaurant -- but the prices are astronomically high, and are on par with truly expensive cities such as Paris.

The service at this hotel sucks. Really. Try calling the front desk; at best you'll get an answer half the time before hanging up in frustration. And if you decide to wait for help at the front desk, expect to wait as well. Checking out on a Friday morning? Yeah, it makes sense to have one person working. And when you do have someone helping you? The service is indifferent at best. If this were one of those countries that's just totally lacking a service culture, I'd be more forgiving. But Greeks in general are a friendly bunch; just not at the Hilton. Getting coffee at breakfast each morning was an exercise in frustration. Either they gave you attitude, or didn't show up at all to take your order. Only one waitress (didn't get her name, but she looks of SE Asian descent) was kind and proactive about this basic service step. (oh and BTW, breakfast is good, but also costs 35 EUR!)

Perhaps the most annoying thing about this place was the laundry service. Besides being extremely expensive (to be expected, but still more than comparable hotels in other countries), once again the service sucked. On three separate occasions I had shirts "temporarily" lost (at least after the third time I received a hand written note of apology and some chocolates). I'm able to notice a missing shirt, but who knows how many socks I lost during my 19-day stay. The irony of them losing items is that they stick these annoying stickers with your room number onto each article of clothing (or they try to). These stickers are extremely sticky, to the point of damaging some materials as you try to rip them off. After asking them not to place any of these stickers on my clothes, of course they continued to do so. I don't get how no other hotels I've stayed at need to use these stickers for laundry, yet miraculously also don't lose things. I also had colleagues who requested that shirts be folded, only to have them on hangers. There's just little to no attention to detail in the service department.

A huge annoyance came when the hotel pre-charged 3,000 EUR on my credit card. When I discussed having this unblocked, the finance director intervened (because the guy at the front desk was useless) and said it was policy that the amount needed to be blocked. "it's not because we don't trust you..." Hmm, then why do you do this? Anyways she was useless as well (and had a condescending attitude), and I was going to call my credit card company the next day. Then the Hilton had the bright idea of calling my colleague who made the booking to confirm that my company would pay the amount of my stay. So they basically made it seem to my company like I was unwilling or unable to pay. Anyways at least the amount was unblocked in the end, though once again it was a frustrating experience.

In the midst of the economic woes, it was wonderful to have a very well attended Congress at an excellent hotel. Our room rate was not lowered despite the rising dollar. but that's OK. The rooms and the service and the magnificent breakfast were all excellent. The location was close enough to most highlights of Athens. We are glad we returned and hope more poeple will as well.

Room Tip: We had an acropolis view and it is worth asking for.

We stayed at this fantastic Hilton last August for a few days before heading out to the Greek islands and overall it was a wonderful stay. Our room overlooked the Parthenon and was very clean and spacious with a spectacular bathroom. The hotel offered a very good gym, and lovely pool area where you could enjoy a light lunch. The hotel also accepts dogs, which is an added plus, and there is indoor parking. The hotel staff (and especially the front desk manager) was very professional and helped us organize our way to Pireus port (there were taxi strikes so it was difficult to find any kind of transportation during those days), and to change our ferry tickets. All in all, a very professionally run hotel with a luxurious feel. The location is also fantastic, in easy walking distance to Kolonaki, a beautiful neighbourhood in the heart of Athens. The only criticism I have for the hotel is the extra costs we incurred, especially telephone costs, which are quite high. Make sure you know the hotel policy for these extra charges, so there are no unpleasant surprizes at check out. I would certainly stay at this hotel again, with pleasure and I highly recommend it!
