“best place in Athens to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 October 2011

The location is in one of Athens's finest neighborhoods with great restaurants and cafes nearby. The hotel has a wonderful friendly staff and a great bar and restaurant on the penthouse with superb views of the city. The rooms are very clean with comfortable beds.

Room Tip: virtually any street side room. higher floors have fantastic view of Athens and the Acropolis

We stayed here for a few days in late August and were very disappointed.

The hotel is not worthy of 5 stars. It is over-priced, the staff are off hand and one occasion rude, and you have to pay an extortionate amount for internet access.

I really could not recommend this hotel I'm sure that there are far better in Athens that are cheaper.

Ok there were just so many things but ill start with, have they heard of a service elevator? I understand that its Athens and space is extremely expensive. However, the service guys were taking the elevator every time I needed to and the they are tiny too. The elevators that is. Felt that the service folks didn't really care for service. One time I got stopped at a floor and a few service folks hopped on and they were all getting off on a different floor so I had to stop on each floor! I just felt their service was sub-par. There were q few other situations that I felt this way. I wanted to go to one of the islands and they really provided zero help. Give me more than a map, a phone number, a name. They told me the location and then to be careful about scammers. Really?!

And, what five star makes you pay for internet service? Yes no internet... There's a really really slow connection the lobby but its horrible. And I think its like 18 euros for a day. I don't stay awake for 24 hours. They should restructure it. I get to choose by hour where its 6 euros a day or a day at 18.

Ok something about the sheets because my skin completely broke out. it felt itchy all the time. It was all just not five star caliber.

Oh and their recommendations from the concierge? Terrible. Better bet was looking online which was costly.

One thing to note, its literally at the top of the hill with no provided transportation so pack light. It's also on the opposite side if town to the sights but everything is walkable.

Dear User banana401,

Thank you for your comments which are always read with care and evaluated by Hotel’s management.

We would like to assure you that our staff are in constant training in order to achieve the best possible standards of service.

The internet is an extra service which is charged in the majority of 5 star hotels in Athens. Despite this fact, we offer our guests free Wi-Fi access in the Lobby and a wide variety of internet packages (from 15 minutes access to 24 hours).

Our hotel is renowned for its magnificent view to Acropolis and Athens Capital and also its proximity to all spectacles in Athens.

Hello I would like to extend our thanks to entire staff of the St. George. This was our first visit to Athens although we had a very pleasant time during our visit the management and staff had made our stay that much more pleasurable. The staff is knowledgeable and very helpful and the facilities are clean and elegant and we did enjoy the area as well. The shopping dinning and the views are great .My partner and I would most certainly stay at the St. George on our return to Athens
Many Thanks R & J

Lots of positives at this hotel...great location (amazing views), polite staff, good facilities for this size of hotel including roof top pool. Very clean and nicely refurbished rooms. Hotel is quiet yet only 5min walk from Kolonaki Square. I actually walked to the main tourist attractions including the Acropolis so its very well located.

One minor thing which would let the hotel down are the prices for food and drink...but I got a great deal on the room so didn't really mind.

Based upon their website, I was anticipating a 5 star neutral colored room. Boy was I wrong! We showed up and our room had old carpet with a red bedspread and trimmings more akin to the red light district in Amsterdam than a 5 star hotel. Our 'delux exterior view' was of construction site across the street. We couldn't see anything. I spoke with management and pointed out the description of our hotel room when I booked the room and was able to move to a different, slightly updated room with a higher view of the construction site. If you looked just right, through a small gap between the construction site and building next door, you could see the lights of Athens. The second room seemed cleaner than the first, with fake hardwood floors rather than that nasty carpet. The people who worked there were generally friendly and helpful. But all and all, this was not what I expected.

Dear User Jennifer

We are very surprised and shocked by your comment.

The description “red porn room” does not at all reflect the standard of our hotel and the quality services provided, and is defaming the name of the property.

We understand that the room's colour scheme might not be to your liking, however the term "porn room" is demeaning and completely untrue.

We hope that you will be able to correct the title of your review as soon as possible .

St George Lycabettus is a very nice hotel situated up on the slope of Lycabettus Hill in the fashionable Kolonaki neighborhood. The views of the Acropolis are stunning, although I think some artistic license has been used in regard to the pictures they use on the website. We paid extra for an Acropolis view and we did have one... if we went outside on our balcony. Our friends, who paid for the same room, got a few view of it from their room and windows, so be sure and ask which room you will get when you book.

The little bar/restaurant down across the street associated with the hotel (Frame) was quite good. The staff was professional and courteous if not a little snooty. The staff at the restaurant up on the top of the hotel were a little more snooty. We did not eat there, but we did have a drink or two and yes, they are expensive, but the view is worth it.

A few small complaints, the beds are hard (although this seems to be the case all over Greece) and the wifi situation is ridiculous. It is free in the lobby (slow) but if you pay 20 euros and up then you can use the fast wifi. Why luxury five-star hotels are chintzy with the wifi in this day and age is beyond me. It is quite annoying to be nickled and euroed to death for something that should be included in the room like my hair dryer.

All in all, the St George Lycabettus was a very nice hotel and I would recommend it.
