“Shabby and Rude with a View”
Reviewed 9 November 2013

From the moment you enter the Hotel, you catch the tone of the staff - the bellman is huffing and puffing so much, we decided we would be better off taking the luggage to the room ourselves. This was not as easy as it might seem, since, after levying the elevator, one has to descend 10 steps - an unusual and terrible design feature. On entering the room, one notices it is very small and the decor is terribly drab. The floor is made of some cheap synthetic, is bouncy and rising up in places. First impressions were poor. We heard from other guests that some rooms have no window.

The hallmark of this hotel is the wonderful view of the Acropolis from its 6th floor restaurant. Thanks to a Greek law that forbids skyscrapers around the Acropolis, the view from Lycabettus Hill, particularly at night, is romantic. However, it took only a few seconds for the romantic spell to be broken by the boorish, heavy set man who is the person who greets you as you enter the bar area. He was downright rude and off-hand. When we said we wanted to order a drink from the bar he claimed that the restaurant was fully booked and this might be a problem. When we mentioned that we had a reservation and wanted to have a drink at the bar first, he strongly suggested we might want to go and sit at a table. We held our ground and sat at the bar. We ordered two of the house special martinis, which were good but cost an exorbitant $18 each!!! - so much for Greece's economic woes! We spent about 45 minters on our drinks and during that time not one solitary person came in to the dining room. So much for the assertion that the restaurant was fully booked.
The next morning we had breakfast. We tried the scrambled eggs which were cold. The restaurant staff had forgotten to light the burner under the hot plate.

This is a poorly run hotel that has rude staff, exorbitant prices for food and drink and generally looks run down.

Avoid.

Room Tip: Ask for a window!

Dear Guest Cheersfornow,
Thank you for posting your observations on trip advisor. Please allow me to clarify some points you raise. The staff at the family owned and run St George Lycabettus Hotel are all highly trained professionals who are constantly assessed by our operations manager to assure our valued guests of a high standard of service. Reception staff and our concierge are always delighted to be of service. Our guest rooms and suites ALL have windows - room tariff is carefully designed to take account of view type, balcony etc. There are some stairs to descend in the hotel for some rooms and suites, but we are always only too pleased to allocate rooms with direct access depending on availability and booking type. Our highly trained team is delighted to assist you with any queries you may have to assure you of a memorable stay.
The La Suite Lounge Restaurant is very popular, and is often fully booked due to the fabulous view and menu. We value feedback, and to this end, often book only one sitting per table in the evening to allow our valued guests to relax and admire the view. Our Greek clients often dine later, therefore there are empty reserved places early in the evening. Our Maitre D'Hotel has over twenty years experience in the luxury sector. He is always the consummate professional and seamlessly runs the Food and Beverage Department.
The hotel employs a continuous refurbishment program which targets each required area to assure our guests of a quality hospitality product. Our pricing strategy is carefully created to provide value for money with a range of products to suit a variety of pockets.
I have alerted the relevant department head with regard to the Bain Marie oversight - thank you for bringing it to my attention, your feedback is of great assistance.
Kindest regards,
The Management Team

This was a very good hotel and location for our particular needs. We were going to be spending four days in Athens, so it wasn't necessary to be staying right near the Acropolis, etc. Rather, it seemed like a good idea to try the Kolonaki area -- a bit more peaceful and chic, yet still easy to get anywhere. That strategy worked nicely for us. Easy shot to the National Arch Museum and to Mt Lycabettus ... and not bad at all getting to the Plaka/Acropolis.

Per some of the other posts, I wouldn't score this as a 5*, more like 4*. Rooms were very nice, though a little compact. Good view of the Acropolis from the room, and an even better view from the top floor restaurant/bar. We enjoyed the daily breakfast on the top floor, and found the staff to be extremely helpful. The price seemed fair for a major European city. All in all, a good experience. We would recommend this hotel if your goal is to stay in Kolonaki.

This hotel is very well-known in Athens, mainly for the view. The view from the rooftop is truly excellent and I imagine that if you get a room with a view then it's perhaps worth some of the money. I did not get this. I had a 'courtyard' room, which is essentially a room with a view of a wall. Luckily, was on a high floor so had some daylight.

The staff on check in we're very efficient and friendly, though I didn't find the bar staff so good. The mini bar prices are outrageous even for a hotel but the bar is even worse. There was no price list and I was surprised to be charged 9 Euros for one bottle of beer. I have never stayed anywhere where the bar was more expensive than a mini bar.

I arrived on a public holiday and late evening so the restaurant was closed, so I had room service, which was quick, efficient and good.

The room was a good size, clean and tidy and the bathroom was decent. The room is definitely not 5 star and much more like a decent 3 star, as other reviewers have said. The furniture is cheaper stuff and not very comfortable. However, the aged air conditioning worked fine and despite the key card holder by the door, the power does not go off if you take your card out so your devices do not lose power and the air con stays on. However, as some other reviewers have said - the doors and walls are thin and one night there was very loud music coming from somewhere for ages and I could also clearly hear people passing by.

The location is very good. I walked to the Acropolis in about 20 minutes or less and there are some nice small shopping areas and plenty of restaurants close by, but the walk back is pretty steep. There is a fantastic bakery about 5 mins away which is very cheap and good.

I booked a taxi from the airport via the hotel, which was 40 Euros more than if I had got it from the rank. They do tell you this but I was unsure how available taxis would be in practice. The taxis are actually very good and plentiful, so don't fall for this and just get one from the rank outside the airport.

I would say the hotel is OK but no better than that and not five star at all. I think it is trading on the outstanding views from the roof and some rooms and good as they are, it does not justify the rating nor the prices. I don't think I would stay here again because I don't think the rooms are worth the money and I was put off by the bar prices and lack of any view from a lot of the rooms.

Room Tip: A courtyard room will be cheaper but there will be no view at all, so if you want a room with a view...

Dear Guest Andrew R,
Thank you for posting your observations on Trip Advisor. We are delighted that you enjoyed the view from La Suite Lounge. Please allow me to address some of the points you highlight. All of our rooms and suites have natural light. Our Courtyard rooms provide comfort and value for money - our carefully researched room tariff reflects the provision of extras such as private balcony, Acropolis/Lycabettus Hill view etc. The range of prices has been designed to meet the needs of our valued guests. The mini bars and La Suite Lounge have price lists which are available to our guests. The prices are in line with our competitors, and reflect the services and high standards we offer at the St George Lycabettus Hotel.
Sound-proofing and safety are primary concerns at our hotel, and we take both extremely seriously. Both issues are addressed on a continuous basis through our refurbishment planning and execution. The furniture and decor in the rooms and suites is sourced by a well-known and respected Athenian architect to provide the comfort our valued guests deserve.
We hope that this has gone some way towards assuring you that at the St George Lycabettus Hotel, the guest comes first, and that we are always working towards providing the best of hospitality in Athens.
Kindest regards,
The Management

The hotel needs to change very soon too many things because you cannot claim that you are 5star hotel just because of the magnificent and superior view of Acropolis. We were amazed from the view but the rest (room and equipment) were disappointing having in mind the 5star and the prices.

Our room with balcony looked straight out at the Acropolis. It was spectacular at night. There is a great outdoor restaurant down below on a blocked off street that was fun with great food. A lot of locals and not so many tourists. We were worried about the potential noise from the street and restaurants but it wasn't an issue at all. Room was decent with a comfortable bed, bath was modern and clean. All the staff were helpful and friendly, especially with taxis and money exchange. We stayed there 4 nights and would definitely stay there again. Agree with others that this is really a typical 4-star European hotel.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for a view room

After several stays in different hotels in Athens we went to the Lykabettus Hotel. We booked a panoramic acropolis room, the view indeed fantastic, but, the room very small, only around 15m2, far too small for the price. The bathroom also very small, no wifi in the room, equipment of the bathroom pretty basic, everything more like a good three to four star hotel, nothing for five stars, up from the price.Staff very friendly and helpful

Not a 5 star hotel, 4 at best. Rooms are smallish with no wi-fi. To get this you have to sit in a certain part of reception. Location is well away from the main tourist attractions, about a 20 min walk, down a steep hill. There is a great view of the Acropolis from the upstairs restaurant and (small) pool area. Looks great lit up at night. Prices are pretty high, so not a place for a big night out, unless someone else is paying. Expensive for what it is, but maybe that's Athens.
