“Great Location in Athens”
Reviewed 26 October 2010

Great location - you can see the Temple of Olmpian Zeus from the hotel which is just across the street. Acropolis view from the roof top restaurant is mesmerising, no wonder advance table booking is recommended. The breakfast was moved to a makeshift hall on both the mornings which was a dampner. Our room was large enough to accomodate another double bed easily - great bathrooms. Internet is free. the All important Acropolis and the new Acropolis Museum is 5 mimutes walking. The main city centre is 2 tram / metro stations away which is quite fine.

The Royal O. Hotel is situated just minutes to all the main attractions in Athens like the acropolis, the Olympic Stadium, the museum. You don’t need to take the train -everything is walking distance extremely convenient. Has a gorgeous view to the acropolis, offers free internet service, the bed are so comfortable breakfast is average, nice pool and a rooftop bar and restaurant with great views!

The Royal Olympic is a very clean and well-located hotel. A stonesthrow from the Acropolis underground station, the moment you walk through the doors you know you are in for a treat. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the hotel itself is exceptionally clean. The breakfasts in the morning are delicious, and the maids leaving sweets on your pillow before you turn in for the night are a nice touch.

However, the hotel is not perfect. If I could give some criticisms it would be that the roof garden restaurants drinks and food are way way overpriced. You get the sense the hotel is catering for the American tourist market - the sad thing is that many of the American guests were being ripped off. The pool was shut (even though it was 25 degrees outside), and the equipment in the gym is very very outdated.

Also, the maids in the morning are very pushy. We stayed on the first floor - yet there was no chance for a lie-in because they started knocking at your door at 8am. Had to tell them to go away many times.

Anyways, it's a wonderful hotel - if a bit expensive, and I would certainly recommend it. One tip, if you stay at this hotel and have a day to spare and want to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city - then take a day trip to Vouliagmeni beach. You will not be disappointed...

Head out of the hotel and turn right. Turn right again and go to the tram station, and take the tram southbound to VOULA. Ride the tram to the very last station (about 40 minutes), and then catch bus E22 - this takes you all the way there. Just 1 hour from the hotel, Vouliagmeni beach is paradise.

Enjoy!

I actually went in June 2009. Beautiful, well kept, friendly staff, excellent location, felt safe, had the fancy feeling. I have nothing bad to say or anything to warn others about except it is freaking hot in the day time whoa! Wonderful experience, would love to go back...

We were guests of the hotel for four nights, the end leg of a two week stay in Greece. Although we stayed at two very good hotels in Santorini and Rhodes, this was by far the most comfortable of all.
Check in was smooth, although I agree with other posters, somewhat terse and unfriendly.
Our stay got off to a rocky start. We routinely inspect our rooms for evidence of bedbugs, after having learned that 1 in 4 hotel rooms in North America is infested. In the course of inspecting our room, we discovered a large blood stain on the underside of the mattress topper. That room was quite small but satisfactory, the stain excepted. My spouse went down to the front desk to have a chat. The head of housekeeping visited the room, saw the stain, apologized, and we were re-located to an upgraded room. It was quite generous in size and included a bidet in the bathroom. It faced the street and, even with the window closed, the noise level was high. In any event, an inspection revealed a large urine stain on the underside of the mattress topper. Again, there was a visit to the front desk and the aforesaid routine repeated. This time, housekeeping stayed for the inspection. The third room faced the pool and fell somewhere between the two other rooms in size and fittings. All in all, we spent over an hour finding a room. For our troubles, we received a fruit plate and bottle of wine.
Now a list of the pros and cons of the hotel:
Pros:
Good looking hotel, with very attractive and clean public spaces.
Very clean room, with linens changed daily on request.
Terrific location. We never took transportation. We walked everywhere - Acropolis, National Archaeological Museum, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, Parliament, Attica department store, etc.
Bed was extremely comfortable.
Beautiful pool area.
Great breakfast. It was served in a main floor dining area. Perhaps, better rooms have access to breakfast on the roof.
Multiple bars, including the rooftop bar. We had a light dinner (sandwiches and wine) on our last night. The view of the Acropolis is jaw dropping. Nothing in our travels has compared to watching the sunset and the lit Parthenon from that viewpoint. An absolute must.
Helpful doormen, who appear to act as concierges.
Cons:
No concierge.
Unhelpful front desk, which adopts a somewhat distant and impatient attitude.
King size bed is in fact two singles put together with separate linen. Not great if one is sharing with a partner.
Toilet sounded like Niagara Falls when flushed.
The hotel is spread over several buildings and there is no universal access by elevator. We needed to use a specific lift to get to our room. It’s a bit confusing and the front desk failed to explain.
Service in the breakfast room is uneven. We sometimes had to wait for wait staff to bring us coffee while they cleaned and reset tables. Other times, we were offered coffee as soon as we were seated and regularly thereafter.
Notwithstanding these problems, the overall experience was very good and I would definitely recommend the hotel.

We enjoyed our stay at the Royal Olympic... rooms were comfortable, and the location was perfect! The rooftop restaurant/ bar had a fantastic view of the Acropolis & the Temple of Zeus, but service was a bit slower than would be expected at a 5-star hotel. Food was delicious, though pricey (as would be expected in a 5-star with such a view!)

We were right at the edge of Plaka and felt very safe, even at night. There were cheaper options in the area but I really wanted to splurge on a pool for the hot stuffy weather so this seemed like a good option. Unfortunately it rained and so we didn't even make use of the pool... looked lovely though! Wi-fi system was a bit slow as well... overall a good stay.

Last few nights of a long lovely trip, and I wanted a full-service beautiful hotel to relax and enjoy Athens for a few more days. Mind you this is listed as a 5-star hotel. Checked in and was pointed in the direction of the elevator - no bellhop. Had a problem with my balcony door, which I noticed immediately upon entering the room. Instead of offering me another room, they sent maintenance up with a hammer and spent an hour fixing the door while I was in the room. No offer to enjoy the bar while they worked. BANG, BANG, BANG goes the hammer. Not worth the price. Not even 3-star worthy service.
