“Great modern hotel in heart of city”
Reviewed 11 August 2013

We stayed for two day in August. Firstly, the hotel was just there as we came off the train, right on the square. We dropped off our bags and went off for the day.

The room was very clean and modern. Plenty of space, toiletries etc.

Breakfast was very good ,lots to choose from and with a great view.

One an evening the roof top bar, came to life was was packed by 7pm both nights, great to watch the sunset and see the city light up at night.

Athens is a dirty city, but A for Athens was very clean, great views of the historic sights, great place for a cocktail and close to the touristy bits.

Top tip, ask for a low floor room, this keeps you away from the music from the roof top terrace, if thats what you like.

We stopped off here after getting a late ferry in and before flying out the following day - it was the perfect location for that as it is effectively on top of the tube station with lines that service both the port and airport. The room was large and clean and the cocktail bar is just an amazing and fun spot to people / Acropolis watch until the early hours. The breakfast room was a little dirty (just not cleaned well from the bar the night before), but then the view made up for it. Very friendly reception staff too.

I spent a night on my way to Crete passing by Athens and so decided to spend a night on the way back too. This location actually is the best place to be , discovering Athens. Getting there from Airport is like the easiest way , the train/metro is on a direct line to the station next door "Monasteraki" so no walking or heavy suitcases to carry a door to door from airport . on arrival a very gentle helpful staff that will make your life much easier .rooms are spacy , modern and nicely simply decorated , all necessary is there .the vibrant ,historical part of the city is all around you with a walking distance from all, Plaka , flea market , Acropolis, Museums.....you may enjoy a drink on the rooftop bar with the stunning view of Acropolis or walk around the small streets and Tavernas with Greek traditional music or even go for a late shopping. you will wake up with sun rising from the acropolis while having your delicious breakfast.... a perfect stay...back whenever in Athens

Room Tip: the Acropolis view rooms are noisy , choose always the inside street view or internal rooms more qui...

This was our second stay at A for Athens. Last year we had a bit of trouble sleeping du to noise from the Monestraki square and partly the rooftop bar. Still, service and location is great, so we booked again, but this time we skipped the Acropolis View and went for rooms facing the backstreet. Which proved to be very smart as there was absolutely no external sound. So if you travel with kids like us, or for any other reason want to go to bed around midnight book these rooms. You still get a great experience.

My wife and I spent 2 nights at A for Athens in a non-view room. Our purpose in staying there was to witness the views of the Acropolis that Trip Advisor reviewers had been raving about. We decided that the cost of staying in a room with a view was beyond our budget and hoped that the view from the top floor restaurant would be sufficient. And it was – what a view it is. Stunning, and we lingered long over breakfast to fully appreciate it.

A for Athens is located on a corner of Monastiraki Square and therefore right in the thick of things. That’s the positive. The negative is that it is exposed to all the noise in and around the square, especially at night – musical buskers, raucous partygoers, car horns, motorcycles, etc. Our non-view room was located on the 3rd floor with the windows in the room fronting a side street rather than the square but external noise was still quite audible in the room. I imagine it would be much worse for those guests in rooms that did have a view and faced the square. Fortunately we didn’t hear anything from the partygoers on the 6th floor bar which, as other reviewers have commented, gets packed with people who party on until well into the night/morning and can impact on people staying in rooms on the higher floors.

As for our room it was very good. Large and spacious, clean and modern, with a bathroom to match (although we felt the lighting was a little too subdued in the bathroom). The room included air conditioning, complimentary wifi, refrigerator and safe. But no electric jug or tea/coffee, which was a bit disappointing given the other inclusions and the cost of the room.

As mentioned, breakfast was served on the sixth floor and the quality of the buffet-style breakfast complemented the view – excellent!

But there are minuses with the hotel. First the external noise, as mentioned earlier. Second, the lift is tiny and we and our 2 bags had to be squeezed in. We are relatively thin people – larger sized people would have no hope. On leaving the hotel my wife preferred to use the stairs than squash in with me and the two suitcases. Third the hotel has people from outside coming and going all day and most of the night (but thankfully not at breakfast!) to the 6th floor café/bar. And finally, the cost. A for Athens was the most expensive of the 8 accommodation places we stayed in during our time in Greece, including in Santorini and Mykonos.

Notwithstanding the quality of the room, the location, the breakfast and the great view from the restaurant I think that the non-view room is a little overpriced and there is better value elsewhere in Athens, such as Sweet Home Hotel and Epidavros Hotel, in both of which we also stayed whilst in Athens. If I had my time again I would stay one night in A for Athens to take advantage of the view at breakfast and stay elsewhere for any additional nights. Note that you can still enjoy the A for Athens view even if you don’t stay at the hotel by simply going to the 6th floor and buying a drink. And the view from ground level in front of the hotel is pretty damn good and costs nothing!

If you want to have an outstanding view of the Acropolis and are prepared to pay for it you should consider this hotel.

Room Tip: some rooms have view in Akropolis but are along main road with lot of traffic and also every evening...
