“Decent rooms, but not a 4-star hotel”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Wasn't a bad experience, but I couldn't recommend staying here. Other hotels in the area offer a much better value for the money.

The good: Our rooms were nice and clean. Breakfast was good. Free WiFi in lobby.

The bad: Service was disappointing. WiFi is mindbogglingly expensive for such a low-cost benefit. Spiral staircase lacks railing on all but the lowest and top floors. Elevator is tiny. Electronic "do-not-disturb" system is flawed in that you can't indicate "do not disturb" when you are out of the room. So if you leave your room briefly in the morning or early afternoon intending to return quickly, you might find the cleaning staff in your room when you return.

Details on the disappointing service: Our check-in time was 2:00pm and we arrived around 3:15pm. The woman at the front desk informed us that our room wasn't ready yet. She instructed us to wait in the lobby for about 15 minutes while the room gets prepared. We waited about 25 minutes before our room was ready. What baffled us is that she never apologized for the inconvenience. Granted, waiting ~25 minutes wasn't a huge deal, but I can't imagine *any* other hotel inconveniencing the customer in this manner without an apology. To be fair, she wasn't rude to us; she was otherwise pleasant. This just struck me as bizarre for a hotel that's supposed to be 4-stars.

Stayed one night, rooms were modern and tasteful. Staff was profession and nice. The best part was the restaurant and the view, it felt almost unreal, like you were in a movie. The drama of seeing the Acropolis right over your shoulder while you eat was unforgettable.

Room Tip: Third floor perfect to see thee park

Stayed here in double room on 5th floor. Lovely room , good bathroom. Great view to temple of Zeus. Caught bus from airport. (X95) for 5 euro, very easy and straight forward. Staff at airport were helpful. Walked from sygmata square, about ten minutes walk. Broken tiles on footpath made it a bit harder but nothing to deter you. Cheaper than taxi for 38 euro. Great view of acropolis from rooftop bar. Easy walk to plaka for dinner. Would recommend staying here.

I absolutely enjoyed my stay at the Athens Gate Hotel. Location could not get any better. It was in the heart of the city. The rooftop deck had excellent food and service, with 360 views of the city. Entire staff was welcoming and friendly. Highly recommend staying here.

Athens Gate was an absolute 10 out of 10 in all these categories! The staff was welcoming and helpful. The rooftop restaurant and bar were some of the best views in Athens. Loved the stay and can't wait to come back!

One thing to remember about Europe is that everything is closed on May Day, may 1st. Be sure to plan your archeological tours around this date.

The hotel was a perfect fit for 3 nights in Athens because it is located among the archeological sites so that walking is a definite option. The views are spectacular and the staff accommodating. One irritating factor was that Internet was free on the rooftop and in the lobby but you had to pay to use it in your room. Not a deal breaker but definitely irritating.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of one of the ruins above the 6th floor.

We just stayed at Athens Gate Hotel for 6 nights for the first part of our Honeymoon in Greece. We were welcomed at reception with smiles from the staff, water and Greek sweets. Our room was on the 6th floor with the Acropolis view. It was amazing! No noise issues or anything like that. Every morning the hotel has an incredible rooftop breakfast from 7am-10:30am (that we attended every morning & always looked forward to) where you have a view of the Temple of Zeus while you enjoy. They have yogurt, granola, feta, sun dried tomatoes, meats, cheeses, eggs, potatoes, sausages, croissants, tea, coffee, juice, etc. Something for everyone. Staff is very friendly there as well.

The room was a bit small, but everything in it was new, modern and updated. Everything worked well. Plus, the hotel is in the best location so you won't be spending a lot of time in your room since you are walking distance to The Acropolis, The Plaka, Temple of Zeus, Syntagma Square, Monastiraki, etc. You can also catch the Red "Hop on, Hop off" bus tour about half a block up the street from the hotel that goes all around Athens & also to Piraeus (You catch Piraeus at The Acropolis stop.) Fun way to see the city! The reception was very helpful with calling restaurants for us to inquire about their hours and when you leave the hotel they can book you a taxi for 38 euro flat fee to the airport.

If you plan on renting a car (We did through AutoUnion Car Rental which had fair rates & was a good experience) parking in downtown Athens can be really difficult to do and find. They have underground parking for 15 euro a night if you choose. It was a lifesaver for us.

The only thing that was a downer was that you don't get any wifi in your actual room. You have to go to the lobby or rooftop during breakfast to use wifi. Being such a nice hotel, we kind of expected to have free wifi in our room. You can purchase it in your room if you like, but the rates were pretty steep and the internet speeds were slow.

Overall, great hotel, nice & helpful staff, clean, excellent location! Would definitely come back again.

Room Tip: If you pick a room with the Acropolis view, they are located on the two highest floors on the back s...
