We started to our honeymoon at the Athens Gate Hotel. We stayed just one night there, hoping to be close to the "must see" Athens sites before catching a flight to Crete the next day. We did not get in til later in the day, so it was already dark once we arrived off the metro. The hotel was very easy to find. We had a very nice bellman check us in, giving us many good pointers and the hotel and the city.
That evening, we dined at the hotel's roof top restaurant. The hotel is just a stones trow from the Acropolis, so at night, the view of the Parthenon is simply amazing! Plus on the opposite side of the hotels roof top terrace, you can view the Temple of Zeus...which is literally across the street. This hotel could not be in a better spot! Our meal was fantastic. We had a greek salad to begin, my husband had a beautifully cooked steak, I had a delicious chicken risotto and we had a bottle of wine as well. Our bill was only about 100 euro with tip. The view alone was worth that.
The following day, we had plenty of time to get to many sights and back to the hotel before leaving at 2:00. Everything was soooo close to the hotel! Our only regret is that we would have stayed at least one more night. You certainly need at least 2 days for a quick Athens trip. The new Acropolis museum was worth the visit.
Thank you Athens Gate Hotel for a wonderful stay!

For our 9 day long honeymoon in Greece, we first went to Mykonos for 3 days, then Santorini for 3 days, and finally Athens for the final 2 days before flying out of the Athens international Airport.

Athens Gate hotel is extremely convenient (by mass transit - buses/trains) and central to all the key tourist sites in Athens. Our first day after transferring from Santorini was to visit newly opened New Acropolis Museum, which was a short 5 minute walk from the hotel! The best part is that admission fee was only 1 Euro (until end of this year I believe) and we learned quite a bit about the history of the Acropolis. There is a nice and inexpensive "cafeteria" on site, with a direct view of the Acropolis (great photo op). Highly recommended. Then we walked over to Syntagma Square (10 minute walk), where the Parliament building is, to witness the hourly changing of the guards. That night we visit Plaka, which is just adjacent to the hotel, for souvenirs and other touristy things to buy. Again this hotel is close to EVERYTHING that you will need (walking distance). The next day we walked up the very popular Acropolis, which is a stone's throw from the New Acropolis Museum. Fun times.

Going back to the hotel, it is modern, clean, and provides excellent value. We stayed at the "internal view" room, which basically overlooks the side street (not the view of the Acropolis nor Temple of Zeus). We really didn't mind because the price is far lower than the other rooms with a view, but we still get the same amenities as those who paid far more than we did (such as the included breakfast on the hotel rooftop - excellent!). So for those traveling with a budget like we did, I highly recommend the cheaper internal room.

Our room was clean, comfortable, with a small balcony over looking the side street. Our bathroom was spacious with all the basic amenities. Our porter was very thorough (maybe too thorough) in explaining how to be safe in Athens and avoid being a target of crimes. However, I didn't see it being any more dangerous than where I am from (NYC). Our bed was comfortable and we slept very well in it, perhaps from our exhaustion after a long trip.

The daily complimentary breakfast is OUT OF this world, with table service and a great view of the Parthenon from the hotel rooftop restaurant. What a view!! I bet the view at night there when the restaurant opens for dinner is spectacular. The buffet breakfast was excellent and very filling!

One more comment, the hotel staff was Very friendly and helpful. They even allowed us to confirm our return flight in the manager's office and print out those boarding passes. A++ indeed! I "think" they have free Wifi but there was no standing computer for those without laptops to use.

Most people in Athens can converse in English, so we did not have trouble getting around at all! The mass transit system is also easy to understand and navigate IMO.

I highly recommend this hotel to ANYONE visiting Athens.

This hotel located so ideally to everything was central to our enjoyment.
Even the hotel's discription does not present the value experienced.
The staff was very friendly, curtious and helpful to every big or little need.
From our room was a view of the Acropolis, at night this illuminated view is astonishing.
From the dining room inside and balcony is a view of The Temple of Zeus, I understand some rooms also have this view. Literally, around the corner and up the slope is the Acropolis and the Great Parthenon. Don't miss the new Acropolis Museum built over ruins and viewed inside and outside through glass floors. Ask for John and Michael.
Their infectious personalities will add much value to your stay.

I visited the Athens Gate with my husband for a belated honeymoon getaway. After our stay here, I cannot imagine having stayed anywhere else.

Located very near to Akropoli Metro, it's very easy to come in from the airport, even with bags in tow. It's at the bottom of the hill, right across the street from the Temple of Zeus and with a rooftop view of the Acropolis. Though it's on a main road, we hardly noticed any noise.

Upon our arrival, the staff greeted us with Turkish delight and ice water. Our room was not yet prepared, so they gave us vouchers to enjoy a drink on the rooftop while we waited. A very comprehensive buffet breakfast is served on the rooftop terrace every morning, and it makes staying here excellent value for money.

Our room was very clean and comfortable -- perhaps the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. Housekeeping came in each day while we were at breakfast to change the sheets and came in again in the evening to turn down the bed! The only places where the Athens Gate misses the mark are 1. not offering free wifi and 2. not having a swimming pool (though space does not really allow for this).

The hotel is right around the corner from the Plaka, by far my favorite part of the city, and is ideally placed for getting an early start at sightseeing. (It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the base of the Acropolis and right across the street from a City Sightseeing bus stop.

This is my husband's favorite hotel of all time. Whenever we go on holiday now, I ask where he wants to stay and he says, "The Athens Gate." Should we ever visit Athens again, we will definitely stay here!
