Booked our stay of 5 nights as part of a package with Aegean flights with Lastminute.com as it was cheaper than booking flights and hotel separately. Although we booked a standard double had a nice room facing the Temple of Zeus. Took the X95 Bus from the airport as it was in when we arrived and it only cost 3 euros each but you have to get off at Syntagma Square and walk straight down Amalias Avenue for 10 mins to get to the Athens Gate Hotel - easy enough with light luggage. As we were late arriving had a meal our first night in the hotel rooftop restaurant. We were the only ones dining and enjoyed our chicken linguini, the special, but had a problem with the wine as it was definitely corked and the waiter refused to smell it and insisted it was fine. It was a shame as spoilt our first night a bit which was a birthday celebration but great view of the Acropolis though!

Loved the hotel - comfortable room, friendly and helpful English speaking staff, nice contemporary modern lounge areas and a cosy area by the fire for the cold days in January that we were there. Breakfasts were great up in the rooftop restaurant - plenty of choice hot and cold, but a bit chilly up there when the cold wind was blowing - probably fantastic in warmer weather.

Enjoyed all our sightseeing in Athens and more especially being near to Plaka where there are lots of tavernas, bars and shops to explore at night. Reception gave some restaurant recommendations but our favourite places were The Old Tavern of Psaras for food and Brettos Bar for a nightcap on the way back though Plaka (look out for all the brightly coloured bottles and old casks of brandy).

After trawling through the reviews on Tripadvisor we're very glad we booked the Athens Gate Hotel - great hotel and good location for all the sights - recommend it.

This used to be a rather tired, tour group-oriented hotel, but since it's stellar interior renovation is now a smart, upscale place to stay with clean-lined, moderne furnishings. Front views look out on the stunning Temple of Olympian Zeus (in antiquity, larger than the Parthenon). Though the hotel is on one of Athens' busiest streets, we were not bothered by noise when the double-glazed sliding door to our balcony was closed. The bed was comfortable and the well laid out bathroom equipped with a terrific shower.

The rooftop restaurant affords dramatic 360 degree views out over central Athens, including the Acropolis and Mt. Likavitos. This is where a daily buffet breakfast is served, and while the views are glorious and the offerings plentiful and delicious, it was the only area of the hotel's operation that fell short, in that the restaurant staff were hopeless. They stood around chatting amongst themselves each morning of our stay, instead of helping new arrivals find a table, cleaning off dirty tables and filling coffee cups. Our last morning we were joined for breakfast by an Athenian friend who quickly sized-up the situation and it was amusing (and satisfying!) to watch her instill some much-needed motivation in the staff with a few well chosen Greek directives!

Rooms on the back of the hotel have a view of the Acropolis from the upper floors only. The backside rooms face a residential street and are quieter; a good option for light sleepers.

Most everything in central Athens is within walking distance of the Athens Gate. It's 10 to 15 minutes to Syntagma Square, the Plaka, the base of the Acropolis and the * Absolute Must See* new Acropolis Museum.

My spouse and I have been travelling regularly to Greece since the early 1970's, know the capital extremely well, and this hotel is now our first choice for an economical place to stay in increasingly pricey Athens.

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights while visiting Athens in December. As the airport is pretty far away from the main city centre, so when we took the metro from the airport, we were happy to find that the hotel was within a 2 minute walk from the Akropolis metro station. As we arrived late in the evening, we decided to have dinner at their rooftop restaurant which was absolutely packed (seemed like a good choice for a romantic dinner), and the food was excellent but was just a bit pricey so we didn't eat there again for dinner. The views cannot be beat as we had a perfect view of the Parthenon and the Temple of Zeus while we ate. Breakfast in the morning had enough variety that you could choose something different everyday if you liked, and again was excellent. The rooms were spacious and comfortable with the most amazing pillows, we had an unspoiled view of the Temple of Zeus from our balcony, but due to its location on a very busy road, you could hear the traffic noise at times, though it never really disturbed my sleep.

The hotel itself is situated very close to the new archeological museum, the Temple of Zeus and of course the Parthenon. It also has a great choice of restaurants just beyond the Akropoli metro station and a little bit of shopping nearby. Its within walking distance to many of the major landmarks of Athens, so if you're looking for a bit of luxury while staying in Athens, choose the Athens Gate and you won't be disappointed.

Stayed for one night in Athens- Excellent location- behind the Acropoli. Easy to get to on the metro and from the airport (my partner) pulled heavy luggage all over Europe and we especially looked for locations with proximity to train stations as we were reluctant to use taxis. Very nice hot breakfast. Peope in Athens are great - very open minded, helpful and this was the same for the Reception staff.

Highly recommended. There is a good cheap restaurant in Plaka - Will get name and post here. We went back the second day and the owner gave us deserts and "UZO" on the house, The meal for 2 people was only 25 Euro.

Hotel is highly recommended. TV channels with English as well. Internet was reasonably charged.

I stayed at ‘Athens Gate’ with my partner and our experience was overall a very pleasant one. We had paid for the standard double but we were upgraded at no extra charge at the superior with a fantastic view over the Zeus temple opposite. Besides the fantastic view, the room was spacious enough, with a double bed, plasma TV, small table and two chairs and a cupboard (only thing that was surprisingly missing was tea facilities). The bathroom was one of the most spacious one I have ever come across in a hotel however with a shower instead of a bath tub but this was not an issue. The room was nicely decorated and spot clean. Wireless internet available at additional charge (as well as other services such as ironing, dry cleaning etc) Breakfast at the roof restaurant with a stunning view of the acropolis was superb; the quality, quantity and variety of the breakfast were also of a high level- we did not try the restaurant but it did look a bit overpriced (however having a drink at the roof restaurant/ bar was the same price with anywhere else in Athens. Staff were very helpful and kind (in our first afternoon, a lovely maid dropped by our room to check everything is all right and offer us some Greek chocolate). Location is excellent, minutes walk from the major sites (acropolis and museum, constitution square, old town) as well as next to a metro station. All together, a modern, nice and convenient place to stay while at Athens.

Me and my wife stayed here for a birthday get away and were very impressed with the location and standard of the hotel. The front desk staff were very welcoming and the hotel was in a great location close to metro and right opposite the Temple of Zeus - a top tourist site. We were only a few minutes walk from the Acropolis and other major tourist attractions.

I had booked the superior room with a view of the temple of Zeus. The room had a great view and was very clean although it was a little smaller than I had imagined. The hotel had a great restaurant at the top floor which had brillant views of the city and the Acroplis.

We loved the fact that the metro, shops and restaurants were so close by. The metro is the best way to get around. Be wary of taxi drivers who try to rip you off on the weekend saying that "the rate goes up on Sat and Sun" it's all an effort to rip you off. Apart from this we really enjoyed our stay at Athens Gate hotel and very much recommend a stay there.

Be sure to visit the new museum which is a 5 minute walk away! So much great history.

TIP: On arrival in Athens airport we got the blue line underground to Syntagma and changed here for 1 stop on to the red line to Acropli. This station is literally 3 minutes walking distance from Athens Gate hotel but be sure to have some sort of map to point you in the right direction. Visit Gazi area for bars and night life.

We stayed in Athens Gate hotel for 3 nights in December and just loved it.Though the rooms are a bit small but that's the room size for every 4 star hotel in Europe. The rooms of this hotel are one of the cleanest rooms. The staff is also good and quite friendly - we needed a kettle to warm up water and they were quite prompt in responding. Breakfast served in the morning is good. And the best part is the location - it is 2 mins walk from Akropolis tube station - you can see a very good view of Acropolis from the hotel roof top restaurant. It is just one stop away from the Syntagma square, so the area is quiet and yet very close to main attractions. The area is safe as well. We stayed there for 3 nights, and all the three nights we came back to the hotel at around 2 in the night and it was quite safe. Well, one of the things that I really liked about Athens is that it is quite alive till late night - loads of traffic and all the restaurants are open quite late. We stayed in a room which had a balcony with street view. I would recommend to avoid booking room with a view of Temple of Zeus as the room is just above a main road and there's a lot of traffic on the road till late night.
