This Hotel has it all: beautiful and quiet room (we were on 5th floor, facing side street) with comfy bed, convenient location to all the major sites (we walked everywhere!), helpful staff, roof top terrace for the most amazing breakfast selection and a view of the Acropolis! We stayed here for two nights and were glad we did. Didn't even consider another location after reading the great views of this hotel. Thanks TA writers!

What a way to start your day: great selection of breakfast items, delicious coffee AND outdoor seating with view of the Parthenon. One night we were stumped as to where to go for dinner and decided to take some pictures first from the terrace of the Parthenon which is lit up at night. We ended up staying for dinner and it was extremely good.

This hotel was a splurge for us but so worth it. I cannot say anything negative about this hotel. Treat yourself to a great stay in a terrific location.

We stayed here for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel is very conveniently placed for the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus and many other interesting sites. It is on the edge of the Plaka area. There is a wonderful roof top restaurant and bar where breakfast is served. The staff are all very helpful. If I had a criticism it would be the lack of drawer space in the bedroom but that would be all.

This hotel has excellent facilities, wonderful views and professional and friendly staff in all areas. The rooftop bar is a delightful spot at the end of the day and the dinner we had there was one of the best we had in Athens. The free computer use was much appreciated as was the breakfast 'to go' which was provided for our early morning departure. I recommend Athens Gate unreservedly.

We stayed at 3 different hotels during our 10-day vacation in Greece. Athens Gate had the perfect mix of everything we were looking for in a hotel.

LOCATION: The hotel is literally across the street from the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian's Arch. Also, it is only 10 minutes away (walking distance) from Acropolis and in close proximity to shopping, dining and public transportation.

ROOM: Very clean and updated rooms. A spectacular view of Temple of Zeus from our balcony (this was VERY exciting). The bathroom is nice and the bed is comfortable. The room is a tad small, but we didn't care since it was clean, updated and comfortable.

FOOD: The breakfast is good, but the view of Acropolis is the highlight. The hotel restaurant is on the roof and you have unobstructed views of Athens. Oh, and the coffee is delish.

STAFF: Most of the staff was extremely helpful. They answered our many questions and made excellent restaurant and shopping recommendations.

HOTEL (in general): The hotel is more boutique-ish. No pool or fitness center, but it's a wonderful place to stay.

DOWNSIDES (there are just a few): One computer with internet for all guests. We had to wait for the computer almost every time we came down to the lobby to use it. No free wi-fi (bummer). They forgot to deliver the birthday wine and fruit I requested for my husband.

Overall, we were extremely pleased with our stay and would definitely recommend is to other leisure travelers!

This relatively small hotel has arguably one of the best locations in Athens for the tourist traveller yet it is relatively inexpensive. Our room was fairly small yet very clean, comfortable with a modern bathroom and a new flat screen TV - something many budget hotels have yet to afford guests. Despite a busy main road right outside, double glazing and thick drapes meant weren't disturbed at all by the traffic.

Our check-in was quick and easy despite being fairly late in the evening. The next morning we could not believe our view - we were just across the road from the Temple of Zeus and just along from Hadrian's Gate! A nice leisurely breakfast the next day on the upper floor open air balcony revealed another amazing view - the Acropolis just across the rooftops 300 - 400m away and the new Acropolis Museum was even closer. The pedestrian friendly Plaka with its little shops. cafes, bars and restaurants is close by too - starting just down an adjacent side street. Several rental car and scooter, and ferry ticketing agencies are almost next door on the main road. Apparently the airport bus runs close by too although we preferred the convenience of a cab. Also The Big Bus stops almost outside too offering an excellent way to see the sights quickly before deciding which ones you'd like to take the time to enjoy on foot.

The only criticism I could offer would be that the lift is rather too quaint with its manual door operation, lack of announcing its arrival at your floor, its small size and somewhat slow progress. However, it probably came with the renovated building and the small lift shaft no doubt constrains a modern upgrade. Also there was no complimentary wifi, something many Greek hotels, cafes and restaurants offer, although free Internet access is provided at a guest desktop PC and printer in the lobby adjacent the bar.

On our early morning departure we were offered a small complimentary breakfast pack to see us through to boarding our ferry ride. Even without the convenience of all the close-by attractions, the Athens Gate Hotel offers a good clean modern room, by budget priced Greek hotel standards, with more than adequate facilities and obliging staff. We will probably be in Athens again next year and I'm certain we won't even bother looking at another hotel - this one is just right. We'll be back, I'm sure, and I'm already looking forward to it - especially now that I know how to work the lift!

We stayed at the Athens Gate from 23-26 September after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor and paid extra for a view of the Acropolis/Temple of Zeus (we got the latter). The room was small and although recently refurbished, there were some snagging issues - the toilet roll holder was loose, the door backplate broken, the safe did not work and the do not disturb sign did not work (which may be why a member of staff walked in on me naked without so much as an apology or explanation why). The room was also noisy because of the six lanes of traffic outside although that did not stop me sleeping. There were no tea/coffee making facilities or irons in room (ironing was available but at a cost) and no lower level clothes storage facilities. The laminate flooring also looked like it had seen better days.

The internal staircase is ropey and not recommended for the elderly or frail - its a stone spiral without handrails for the most part and quite slippery. We resorted to using it on a few occasions (we were on the fifth floor) due to the time it took for the lift to arrive (of which there are only two and they are tiny).

The view from the restuarant was spectacular. We did not eat dinner in the hotel so cannot comment on the quality of food/service in the evening but at breakfast the buffet layout was cramped and service disorganised - one more than one occasion we had to go and find our own cutley and crockery because the tables were not laid/partly laid.

Maid service for the room was good and the staff were very helpful, especially as our command of the Greek language is shocking. This, along with the incredible location of the hotel are the reasons why I have not scored this hotel much lower.

I'm so glad I went with Athens Gate. I almost went with the Fresh Hotel, which seems cool, but the location doesn't even compare.

The location of The Athens Gate could not have been more perfect. It is right in or on the edge of the Plaka area and literally right beside the Temple of Olympian Zeus. It is within easy walking distance of the the new Acropolis museum, the metro stop, the Acropolis itself and the Plaka area. Everything else is a short metro ride away.

We could not believe the view from our room of the Olympian Zeus temple. It blew us away. The room was very nice, the bathroom was nice. We got a huge kick out of the window in the shower to the room itself. Everyone at reception was very nice and they let us check in early. Thank God since we came directly from the airport and were exhausted.

The view from the hotel bar/restaurant is phenomenal of the Acropolis and Olympian Zeus. We took some great photos up there and immensely enjoyed the free breakfast up there in the mornings, as well as drinks at night. We decided to eat there one night and it was good. We were just too tired to venture out.

When we checked out, there were no surprises. I guess tax is already included in the quoted price? It was exactly what the room rate was.

This is a great location, and a very nice hotel for the price. Wouldn't even consider staying anywhere else in Athens!
