I stayed at the Herodion the 1st week of February 2014. Trip Advisor's reviews and information was a primary factor in my decision to stay here.
The hotel front desk staff far outclassed the facility itself as far as I was concerned. They were polite, very friendly, and accommodating. When I checked in, my room wasn't ready so I went to the roof top to experience the views there. One of the gentlemen from the front desk located me on the roof top to let me know when my room was ready and apologized for the inconvenience. I thought this was very thoughtful and kind of took me by surprise.
Once I got squared away in my single room, I couldn't help but notice an odd odor that smelled like sewage gas coming from the bathroom. I ignored it for a while but through the first night it became noxious. After (2) days, I told the staff and they said they'd sent up a maintenance person to handle it.
The hotel staff didn't get back to me on this to let me know what the issue was but the smell had partially gone away although it was somewhat better than it previously was.
The room itself was small, this I expected. It was well worn with furniture showing significant signs of age and use. As reported by others, the beds weren't overly comfortable by North American standards as there was a non-box spring mattress that was placed on a hard wooden surface. The pillows were great by comparison.
The room itself was reasonably clean although the bathroom floors look like they hadn't been mopped for a while as there were obvious signs that it had not been. The sheets weren't changed every day, especially the mattress cover. I know this because the sheet was stained and I noticed it was the same one every evening I turned in for the night.
The "court yard view" the company lists on its website is an open shaft in the design of the hotel that offered no view other than a look inside the other rooms and the building materials and ladders on the basement floor. Not picturesque.
The un-obscured view of the Parthenon from the roof top is about as good as it gets from a hotel in the area. It was nice just to sit top side and view the sunset or flood lamps against the walls of the Acropolis and Parthenon. It was definitely a highlight of my stay at the Herodion.
The close proximity to the Acropolis Museum, the Acropolis entrance, and Plaka are definite advantages for the Herodion. There's also several pick-up locations for hop on/hop off bus tours a very short distance from the hotel, located just in front of the Acropolis Museum.
The daily breakfast was adequate though selection of items was marginal. The bacon needed to be cooked a lot more in my opinion but it was edible. Once again, the staff were excellent and truly a pleasure to talk to. I actually looked forward to saying good morning to the ladies that worked there.
The bar and restaurant area were very nice but I didn't make use of either during my stay.
Based on the convenient location and professional staff of the Herodion, I would recommend staying there. The actual quality of the room I stayed in (RM #225) was in my opinion below average.
