“Good conference hotel but not 5*”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

I came here for a work event at a nearby conference venue. The hotel is comfortable, large, the staff at the guest services and reception were really friendly and helpful.

The rooms are very nice, but not 5* - I'd say 3-4* facilities (pool was closed, breakfast was rushed and you pay for wi-fi?). House keeping was efficient and to a high standard, the noise wasn't too bad.

The prices are definitely 5*, looking at around 6.50 for a small cola, and the service in the bar was very underwhelming. We went for a drink and I asked fro a menu for drinks - soft drinks, coffee etc... I was given the cocktail menu - when I explained what I wanted it was blank looks and a walk off.

Breakfast was amusing - at one point the waitress removed my friends plate whilst she still had the fork in her mouth - a clear sign we were in their way.

The location is around 1.5 miles (walking) from the main square. There is a shuttle service there free from the Hotel which is quite good, the location is not the best - quite a number of adult shops around and I didn't feel 100% comfortable walking around the area on my own.

The hotel has a chain feel to it, quite friendly in some areas but probably not my first choice when I return to Athens.

Room Tip: Ask to overlook the pool, the noise on the road side is not too bad.

I spent three nights here for a conference. The hotel is situation in rather ugly part of Athens so it's a welcome sight when you walk into the lobby and it's modern, clean and spacious. The reception staff were welcoming and efficient and my room was clean and comfortable. The double glazing kept the high level of road noise out but it did mean that you couldn't really get any fresh air in the room unless you were prepared to put up with the noise. And happily the shower was powerful too.

There was a good choice at breakfast and the buffet lunches were excellent with a wide mix of hot and cold, all very tasty and fresh and lovely friendly staff.

Bar prices are as you'd expect - HIGH!

The free shuttle bus to and from the centre of town was very useful and the concierge was very helpful and recommended an excellent restaurant to us (Strofi).

The conference rooms were fine (Lamda, VIP, Ballroom) even if they didn't have any natural light. The chairs were comfortable and there was always plenty of water available.

I was here when there was another much bigger conference on and at times the hotel was really busy. However, it's so large that it coped well and the staff seemed confident and skilled in handling such large groups.

So all in all great for conferences but you'd get lost in this hotel if you wanted a city break.

its a good walk to town or 2 metro stops the area is not bad but not good. The hotel pool is not open after September and the spa is £15.00 to use ! The room service is great. Everything's costs extra. There is a free minibus to town and that is efficient and quick and FREE. The drivers are not chatty. Its a chain style big hotel and if you get it for the right price you won't be disappointed its a business meeting hotel.

Room Tip: breakfast is abundant but expensive

Dear flo1Cheshire,

Thank you for choosing to stay at the Athenaeum InterContinental whilst visiting Athens earlier this month. We greatly appreciate your feedback and would like to take this opportunity to clarify that we have an outdoor pool that operates during the summer months and weather permitting, may remain open even later. For example, this year, our pool closed on 4 November due to the fact that we had warm weather in Athens in October and early November. With regard to the I-Spa by Asian Spa City Retreat, if a guest wishes to use the wet areas (sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, footbaths and event showers) the cost is Euro 15. However, if a guest has a spa treatment, the use of the wet areas is free of charge. We have also noted your comment about the cost for breakfast and would like to inform you that our price for breakfast is in line with our competitors in Athens. We thank you again for your valuable comments and look forward to welcoming you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens.

Yours sincerely,

Martha Pallis

the hotel is big, the lobby looks new and very decorated, when you go up to the room it loos a bit out dated, but very clean.
the room is big and very comfortable.
bathroom is well equipped and clean.
service is great, and breakfast is the best.
they gym is not so big, but good enough with water and towels and all needed equipment.
the problem is the location. nothing to do in the hotel area, need to get a taxi to city center where all the restaurants and street markets are.

Room Tip: try to get a room not facing the street, if u want the window open to avoid the noise.

We stayed two nights at this newly renovated hotel. We were in a competitor hotel and didn't have good service so decided to stay here...a very good decision. We were greeted with friendliness and smiles. They have a free shuttle that takes you to the market area....a must if you are visiting Athens. The renos look great. I would recommend this hotel for both business and family travel.

The view from the top floor bar is amazing, and worth a visit itself, even though many places in Athens have the same vista. Other than that - the hotel is good but nothing much more. Large open spaces, decent restaurants, decent but not great gym where half the equipment did not work, good large rooms but noisy air conditioning. Staff was indifferent but effective. Would not visit unless for business reasons

We stayed here for a 5 night break and we weren't disappointed. The rooms were lovely tho the view wasn't the best (114) but we didn't spend too long in the room for that to be a problem. The shuttle bus into the centre was great a real bonus. We had pre booked breakfast which was lovely - you wouldn't go hungry and our waitress was amazing. My biggest grumble is the price of drinks €8.50 for a small beer and even €6.50 for a bottle of water was rather costly. We would have used the hotel more after a long day sight seeing if the cost of a coffee or beer had been slightly less. I know you expect to pay more in a hotel but when a beer in the Plaka area is €3.50 I felt the cost in the hotel was just a bit too much. Other than that a great hotel!
