“Perfect service 5*”
Reviewed 1 August 2014 via mobile

First thing to mention about this hotel is everyone is so friendly and they have fantastic service from the cleaners to reception to the waiters to room service.
I stayed here for a week on business and would gladly stay again. Yes it's a little far out but it's a very small price to pay for the quality of hotel.

Only one point,
The rooms are a little outdated and could do with a spruce up.

I visited other colleagues at other hotels and this is by far the better of the lot and what makes this hotel... The service from the staff.

The lady on the end of the phone with room service I want to give a special mention too I wish I could remember her name but she was fantastic a real gem!
Please tell her it's from the lady with the 'freddo' :)

100% recommend this hotel

I decided to do two reviews based on our experiences being so extreme.

Firstly our special needs were accommodated for completely at the booking center. We needed a room without carpet and we got one. The emphasis was completely on the client and how the hotel could best assist them.

The public relations lady was kind enough to show us the paintings that I was most interested in. She opened up venue rooms for us so we could see them. The icing on the cake was being provided with a beautiful publication of the art works. Her generosity warmed our hearts. It is great that a hotel has such a diverse and wide range of art pieces. Several hours were spent admiring them.

The room we got was big and comfortable. Sound proofing was probably the second best sound proofing I have encountered. The pillows were exceptionally comfortable.

The meals at the lower floors were very good quality. Meals had excellent depth of flavour. Apart from one occasion service was very quick and efficient.

Great and friendly service. Room tidied daily. Shuttle provided.

Breakfast selection good with attentive staff

100m to exit of hotel is a good Greek restaurant called VASILLIS. No frill and tasty Greek food. Easy on wallet. Try it!

Room Tip: I am not too sure myself

Intercontinental was definitely a pleasurable stay for both my wife and I. We stayed 3 nights on our honeymoon right before heading to the Greek islands. We stayed on the 8th floor, so had the luxury of an open bar which contained beer, wine, and cocktails, and excellent meze (appetizers) daily from 6-9 pm (strongly recommend staying on 8th or 9th floor if you like drinking alcohol and consuming good food; worth it for us). Of note was the fact that my wife and I had forgotten our battery for our DSLR camera, and we knew going to Santorini without this would be comparable to a pale person laying in the Mediterranean sun in Mykonos without SPF 50. The staff on the 8th floor executive lounge went above and beyond to ensure that we could find a battery for our camera, and because of their help we were successful in finding one! Also, check out Geros in the Plaka for great traditional Greek food and a great time, and the Butcher Shoppe in gazi (which was about a 10 minute cab ride from the hotel but so worth it for meat lovers).

Strange things: the best restaurant in house is closed on Mondays. For me, strange. I actually never saw a hotel restaurant closed for one day.
Not so good: I have eaten one of the "Greek traditional" dishes in Cafe Vienna and it tasted like Hungarian letso out of a can. It even looked like that (sausage with peppers in Hungarian version, supposedly pheasant sausage with peppers in Greek version).
View from my hotel room was straight into some ruin across the street.
Good: the rooms are spacious, clean but old and showing it.
The best and the reason for the rating: the view from the roof top bar. I can even stand 9 EUR price for a small beer looking at Acropolis. I would stay there again just for the view. If it wasn't for it... Well...

Room Tip: One of the top floors towards Acropolis.

Dear MrRommie,
Thank you for choosing to stay at the Athenaeum InterContinental Athens and for taking the time to write a review. We are pleased to learn that you enjoyed the view of the Acropolis from our Premiere bar, it is indeed breathtaking. We have also noted your comment about the quality of the ‘spetzofae’ traditional Greek dish you ate at our Café Vienna and would like to apologise for the disappointment caused to you. This dish consists of village-style sausages and peppers in a tomato sauce and is a traditional dish from the area of Pilio. We thank you for your valuable feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to Athens and the Athenaeum InterContinental.
Yours sincerely,

The location of the hotel is inconvenient, basically it is in the middle of nowhere, no restaurant, no shopping, no bar, no nightlife, no sight seeing, nothing. You have to take a taxi or walk for 20 minutes to the nearest tube station.

The lobby of the hotel is incredibly empty and decorated with terrible tastes; staff at the reception could barely speak English. It took half an hour to check us in, and that was midnight when everyone of us was so tired. Do not even try to ask for any restaurant advice from the staff, they just sent you to some place where they could get comission.

Room was out of dates, but huge; bathroom was nice though.

Anyway definitely should avoid it if you go to Athens as a tourist.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher levels have been refurbished.

Dear Vivdo,
Thank you for staying at the Athenaeum InterContinental whilst in Athens earlier this month. We have taken note of your comments regarding the level of service you received upon your check-in and would like to express our sincere apologies for the disappointment we caused you. Such lapses in our service are indeed rare and we appreciate the fact that you have brought this incident to our attention. Regarding our location, while the hotel is situated in a residential and business area, one may easily reach the city centre by a variety of modes of transport. Either with our complimentary daily shuttle bus service to Syntagma square, a taxi at the approximate cost of Euro 5 or public transport such as a bus, tram and metro. The bus stop is on the next block, the tramp stop is two blocks away, while the metro station Syngrou-Fix may be reached on foot in 10 minutes or less. We thank you for your valuable feedback and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel on a future visit to Athens.
Yours sincerely,
Martha Pallis

Ok it might not be in the heart of things, but a good shuttle bus service takes you to the action! Lovely rooms, peaceful hotel, nothing too much trouble, great toiletries, friendly staff. Always restocking your room or cleaning....very good service. Food terrific...but a bit pricey, but well deserves its Michelin stars. On the roof under the stars with great views. Small pool but quite sufficient for the time you are there and not out being a tourist. Will definitely be revisiting.

Room Tip: Anywhere is good, some suites have balconies, get one if you can!
