This hotel is two blocks away from the tram that can take you into the center of town in about 18 minutes for $1.50 E. Across the street from the hotel, there is a vendor that sells inexpensive pop, water, and snacks. It is 1/4 of the price of the hotel.

The rooms are amazing.

The Good:
-- The rooms are pleasantly decorated in green
-- Luxurious satin bed sheets
-- Service is better than what you usually get in Greece
-- Excellent gym. The only problem was that they didn't provide ear phones because of " hygiene reasons"...

The Bad:
-- The bed mattress was soft and uncomfortable
-- Rooms facing Syngrou Avenue are noisy. Syngrou should be renamed a highway because the average speed is 120kms per hour and you will hear every passing truck.
I asked to change my room to one that faces the courtyard and that took care of the problem.
-- Probably the only place in the world that charges 19.5 Euros for a Greek salad and 7 Euros for a small Perrier bottle.
-- A phone that has been in the bathroom for at least 30 years can not be silenced so make sure you notify your family and friends they shouldn't call you in case you don't want to be disturbed...
-- At the end of April the swimming pool was still closed and the spa was closed "for renovation" with no announced opening date.
-- Remarkably, this hotel has succeeded in creating the first bad Greek breakfast. Maybe its because they use none of the wonderfully fresh, local produce Greece has to offer!

The Ugly:
-- According to the scales in the bathroom I weigh 9 kilos less than I really do - that's cruel!!!

Bottom line:
If you get it for 90EUR/night net like I did and don't mind walking 500 metres to the nearest metro station then go for it!

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for having chosen the Athenaeum InterContinental on your recent visit to Athens.

We have taken note of all your comments and would like to thank you for your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed the comfort of our rooms and our state of the art gymnasium.

However, we are indeed sorry and surprised to learn that you found our beds to be uncomfortable and would like to apologise for the discomfort caused to you. Most of our guests actually commend us on the comfort of our beds and a bedboard is provided to guests upon request.

Our swimming pool operates during the summer months and opened earlier this year on the 26th of April, however it seems that unfortunately, you had departed our hotel prior to this date.

We were also concerned after reading your comments on our Greek Breakfast and would once again like to express our sincere apologies for the disappointment caused to you. The selection of items on our Greek Breakfast menu are representative of the typical breakfast options chosen by locals; country style bread, fresh butter, jam/marmalade, feta cheese, olives, loukouma (Greek donut), yogurt from goat’s milk, koulouri bread roll, cheese and cream pies plus Greek coffee, Greek herbal teas and of course, fresh local fruit.

We trust that the disappointment you experienced on this visit will not deter you from returning to the Athenaeum InterContinental in the near future.

Family rooms which are about 30 Euros extra are worth every penny especiially the large square room. But they are not the same and there may be only one on each floor. Thus we were not able to get three on one floor. The Club for 50 extra Euros is well run, especially at Breakfast and makes life with children much easier, There is also a great view of the acropolis from the terace. The early evening cocktail hour is very thin on food compared to other similar hotel clubs and not the same caliber as the breakfast. The staff was excellent.

The location is a problem because there is no neighborhood in which to eat or shop. If you miss the shuttle bus to the Square the tram is easy enough to use, but the neighborhood is shabby and full of empty buildinngs and not pleasant. The shuttle bus does not run often enough and is subject to the closure of roads and traffic into town.

The new security swipe in the elevators is the worst I have seen. You can easily get stuck until you realize that if you push the ground floor button it will go there even if no where else and then you can try again. The problem most often occurs if the elevator makes a stop on the way up. It is tricky to learn to use.
The managers were all helpful and competent and tried to help solve many small problems.
I would not recommend this hotel for a short stay, but if you have time in Athens some of the amenities are worth the very poor location.

The cost of the internet in the room is a problem in all Intercontinental Hotels. They are out of step and not competitive.

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for having chosen the Athenaeum InterContinental on your recent visit to Athens and for sharing your comments with us. We are happy to learn that you enjoyed the breathtaking view of the Acropolis from our Club InterContinental lounge as well as the excellent service you received from our staff. With regard to your comments on the food available at our Club InterContinental lounge in the evening, we would like to clarify that the food selection available is a variety of both hot and cold hors d’oeuvres in order to accompany the drinks from our open bar, rather than a selection of main courses as the lounge does not operate as a restaurant. May we also take this opportunity to express our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused to you with the security swipe system in our elevators. May we assure you that this issue is being addressed and we expect an upgraded system to be installed within the next few months. We have also noted your comment on our internet charges and would like to take this opportunity to inform you that are prices are, in fact, in line with our competitors in Athens. We thank you again for your valuable comments and look forward to welcoming you and your family back to the Athenaeum InterContinental in the near future.

I can highly recommend this hotel as we had a very pleasant stay. The staff is very friendly and attentive. This is an upscale hotel so the prices were not unexpected and also are in line with other hotels of this stature. They have a beautiful view of the Acropolis and the Parthenon.

I recommend the 'upgrade' to your room which allows access to the lounge. This includes a breakfast in the morning and Happy Hour from 5-9pm. The snacks they served were excellent. There is also a large balcony in the lounge that overlooks the city and the Acropolis.

While we used taxis for the most part while we were there, the hotel is within walking distance to the Acropolis and the shopping/dining areas surrounding it. The hotel also offers a free shuttle service to these areas as well.

I highly recommend staying at this hotel. If I ever make it back to Athens, it will definitely be where I stay again.

Nice hotel with an excellent sight of the Acropolis. There are two different kinds of rooms cateories. I stayed in the nicer one and when I saw the other category, it was not too great as I was staying, but it was nice too. Are the same rooms but with other decoration. However the location is great. You can walk to the acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki, Lykavittos hill, Sintagma Square and there is a train station near.

We spent our first nights in Athens at the Hilton. Considering the quality & the price, the Athenium was a much better hotel. The rooftop pool was beautiful. Everything was very clean. Definitely consider this spot for your trip!
