“Above and Beyond!”
Reviewed 9 May 2010

As we landed into Athens my partner came down with a horrible stomach bug. I cannot praise the customer service staff at this hotel enough. The doctor they got for us was fantastic, the head concierge came to visit us in the hospital after his shift at 11:30pm on a Saturday night and the head of customer services was so kind and helpful it all made a horrible situation quite bearable. Maybe its just Greek people in general but the rest of the staff were just as friendly, everyone appears to go above and beyond, from the taxi drivers to the shuttle bus driver ran to get a lady a bottle of water after she slipped when running to the bus. The hotel has a fantastic pool, the best hotel breakfast spread I've seen and while the location is a little way out, the shuttle bus into town is fantastic, I highly recommend this hotel!

Lovely hotel with a bit öff trail" location". Lovely spaciuos lobby with efficent checkin - produced my Prioroty card and was offer free upgarde & then offer a further upgrade to club room for only an extra EU 30. Took the club room upgrade I so glad I did room was spacious clean and bed was excellent for a well earned rest after plodding rounds this beautiful city. Club Room gives access to lounge (with free canapes drinks etc) & watching sun go over Athens from the lounge outdoor verandah is truly a memory to keep. Free shuttle (drop & pick up) to / from the square every 5 - 10 mins with friendly driver and a great convenience. Really cannot reccomend more - just try to get a club upgrade - well worth it.

This hotel was amazing. The staff was very helpful and the room was extremely comfortable. Just make sure breakfast is included in the price you pay, otherwise you'll have to pay 30 euros per person each day! The location is not the best, but there's a free shuttle service and a metro station not very far. Two minor critiques I would make are:
- someone will knock on your door at about 9ish every morning and proceed to enter the room (!) to ask whether you've used the minibar! This is not 5 star behaviour.
- the description talks about an in-room dvd player and indoor swimming pool but I saw neither.
All in all, it was a great indulgence - I would recommend this hotel but not at too hefty a price!

Dear Tripadvisor,
Thank you for choosing to stay with us on your recent visit to Athens and for your kind comments. We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us and in particular the comfort of our rooms. However, may we take this opportunity to express our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused to you during the daily morning check of our minibar. Any guest wishing not to be disturbedcould use the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the room's door knob. We apologise if the sign was missed from your room. Also, let us assure you that nowhere in the hotel's website it is mentioned that the swimming pool is indoors. Our outdoors swimming pool operates during the summer months and opened earlier this year on the 26th of April. Also, let us inform you that there are Home Cinemas available in our Deluxe suites. Upon request and at a small cost we can provide a DVD player in any guest room.
Thank you again for sharing your comments. We look forward to welcoming you back to the Athenaeum InterContinental on your next visit to Athens.

We actually ended up in Athens rather unexpectedly for one night courtesy of the friendly volanic ash!

We had taken a flight out of Cyprus to Athens and needed to stay one night before taking the ferry to Italy.

Found the IC by chance and would LOVE to find a reason to go back to Athens - although was also very glad to have left the night we did as unrest heightened the evening after we left.

The hotel is in a strange location, but the room was amazing. We had a family room and for once, it truly gave us enough space and style to all be happy.

If this is the standard of Intercontinentals worldwide I am strongly thinking of changing my Starwood Preferred Guest to the IC one - truly lovely - wish I had time to go to the spa, it looked lovely.

Also, breakfast, although a very costly experience was a pleasure.

This hotel is two blocks away from the tram that can take you into the center of town in about 18 minutes for $1.50 E. Across the street from the hotel, there is a vendor that sells inexpensive pop, water, and snacks. It is 1/4 of the price of the hotel.

The rooms are amazing.

The Good:
-- The rooms are pleasantly decorated in green
-- Luxurious satin bed sheets
-- Service is better than what you usually get in Greece
-- Excellent gym. The only problem was that they didn't provide ear phones because of " hygiene reasons"...

The Bad:
-- The bed mattress was soft and uncomfortable
-- Rooms facing Syngrou Avenue are noisy. Syngrou should be renamed a highway because the average speed is 120kms per hour and you will hear every passing truck.
I asked to change my room to one that faces the courtyard and that took care of the problem.
-- Probably the only place in the world that charges 19.5 Euros for a Greek salad and 7 Euros for a small Perrier bottle.
-- A phone that has been in the bathroom for at least 30 years can not be silenced so make sure you notify your family and friends they shouldn't call you in case you don't want to be disturbed...
-- At the end of April the swimming pool was still closed and the spa was closed "for renovation" with no announced opening date.
-- Remarkably, this hotel has succeeded in creating the first bad Greek breakfast. Maybe its because they use none of the wonderfully fresh, local produce Greece has to offer!

The Ugly:
-- According to the scales in the bathroom I weigh 9 kilos less than I really do - that's cruel!!!

Bottom line:
If you get it for 90EUR/night net like I did and don't mind walking 500 metres to the nearest metro station then go for it!

Dear TripAdvisor Reader,

Thank you for having chosen the Athenaeum InterContinental on your recent visit to Athens.

We have taken note of all your comments and would like to thank you for your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed the comfort of our rooms and our state of the art gymnasium.

However, we are indeed sorry and surprised to learn that you found our beds to be uncomfortable and would like to apologise for the discomfort caused to you. Most of our guests actually commend us on the comfort of our beds and a bedboard is provided to guests upon request.

Our swimming pool operates during the summer months and opened earlier this year on the 26th of April, however it seems that unfortunately, you had departed our hotel prior to this date.

We were also concerned after reading your comments on our Greek Breakfast and would once again like to express our sincere apologies for the disappointment caused to you. The selection of items on our Greek Breakfast menu are representative of the typical breakfast options chosen by locals; country style bread, fresh butter, jam/marmalade, feta cheese, olives, loukouma (Greek donut), yogurt from goat’s milk, koulouri bread roll, cheese and cream pies plus Greek coffee, Greek herbal teas and of course, fresh local fruit.

We trust that the disappointment you experienced on this visit will not deter you from returning to the Athenaeum InterContinental in the near future.
