“A nice way to see Athens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2014

We took the train to get up to Akropolis without having to walk so much. I have been in Athens several times before, but enjoyed the trip though narrow streets of the Plaka. A woman told us about places we saw and there was a stop at Monastiraki for photos. We didn't take the whole trip, since we got off at Akropolis. We took the train from Syntagma,

“There are better options”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014

We did the happy train this afternoon and are sad to say that it was a waste of an hour in Athens. There was no commentary at all. So you didn't really know what you were going past / looking at. We were expecting it to be a good way to get an overview of sites, but without commentary, it was not an effective way to get around. We wish we spent the extra money and did the hop on hop off bus.

“No context or history provided”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 November 2013

I often use this kind of attraction when traveling to get an overview of a location. Usually, there is recorded history or interesting facts. This one had none of that however, just an identification of the site by the driver over a sound system that was essentially inaudible. The vehicle also seemed generally poorly maintained, with torn seats, a jerky braking system and poor suspension (past rides I've taken in similar little "trains" have not been that bumpy and uncomfortable). There are other companies that offer this ride, including both a green and white train, and they might be better, but I would not recommend the red train.

“An easy overview to Athens sights”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 October 2013

I got on the Happy Train at Syntagma Square mostly to kill time before going to the airport, and am glad that I did. Price was nominal for the territory it covered, and it would be excellent for anyone arriving in Athens before they went on serious sightseeing. It creeps through tiny streets where cars can't go, and the slow speed lets you see stuff that would be missed from a bus tour. A few times I could almost reach out and take food off people's tables as we passed outdoor diners. Drawbacks: it can be a bit bumpy on cobblestones, etc., you might get a whiff of diesel occasionally (sit in a rear car), and the guide only announced the sights we were passing (no commentary). However, price was right and it passed some things I would have missed on foot or in/on a bus.

“A great intro to Athens especially if you have kids!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2013

The Happy Train is a fun way to get an introduction to Athens and its main sights. My children loved it as it saved them walking!! The route takes you past all the main sights like the Acropolis, Acropolis Museum, Syntagma Square, Parliament Building, Prime Minister's residence and the ancient Olympic stadium. One advantage it has over the other tourist sightseeing buses is that it can go through the very narrow streets of Plaka and Monastiraki. The trip goes for about an hour and cost 6E for adults and 4E for children over 4 years old. Its sometimes hard to hear the commentary but you do get a pamphlet with your ticket.
