Route is good, but the staff is very rude. Also, there is essentially no commentary. I think the hop on/off would have been better.

The Happy Train covers approximately 10 major sites in central Athens in one hour, including Acropolis, the museum next to it, Syntagma Square and the Olympic Stadium. If you are tight on time and have people in your group who have trouble walking long distance, this is an easy way to get a quick glimpse of the major sites.

However, a quick and partial glimpse is all you could get out of this ride unless you hop off the train - the driver barely slows down the train when the train passes the major sites. If you hop off though, you have to wait at least 30 min for the next train. Also, as the other reviewers noted, the staff simply couldn't care less. Each train has a driver and a guide, but the guide does nothing other than announcing the name of the site. The guide on our train did not speak good English and we couldn't understand what she was saying; so, we had to rely on the map to figure out what just passed. At one point we asked the guide whether there was a stop along the route that was closer to our hotel than the Syntagma Square stop (Syntagma Square is the starting point of the train), and I even pointed out the stop that I thought was closer. The guide was completely uninterested in helping us and simply said "no" repeatedly. I later found out that the stop I pointed out was a 3 minute walk to our hotel, whereas Syntagma Square was a 20 minute walk to our hotel.

The train could have been a great idea if the staff simply shows a little more hospitality and offers a little more information, but unfortunately it's poorly managed and the staff are not motivated to do a good job.

We spotted it in Plaka and got in just to amuse ourselves as we had already been in Athens for two days and seen most of the must - see spots . It was a pleasant surprise to see that there were still more hidden historical monuments in the Plaka area. The train served as fill - in -the blanks for us . The train wound around corners easily and we felt like kids on a toy train.
If only there was somebody to give a short comentary about the sights it would have been more complete .Though it appeared to be a bit expensive in the beginning ...I think it was worth the cost.

The Athens Happy Train follows a short route through some of the major historical attractions in Athens. I mistakenly thought is was a hop-on hop-off train. It's not. That was my mistake but the rest of the problems with the train are that of management. First of all, the staff could care less if you are on the train. There is next to no commentary about what you are seeing even though there is an attendant on the train whose sole job it seems is to provide commentary. And then when the mic is turned on the squeal is enough to deafen you. It is torture. The driver doesn't slow down in front of major attractions, nor does he stop. When he does stop it's in places where you don't want to get out anyway and it's an opportunity for him and his assistant to smoke, chat with each other and chat on their cell phones. The rest of us are left sitting there for ten minutes sweating on the really uncomfortable train seat. This is a great business idea sorely in need of a manager who gives a damn.

We hopped on the Happy Train after our evening meal on our first night and it started our trip to Athens if with a BANG! Brilliant way to get your bearings and see what is available not only to see but where to eat and shop. Thoroughly recommend it. Xx
