“Excellant hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2008

I really enjoyed my stay in the Hera Hotel. All the staff were lovely and helpful. Location is superb. You cannot get closer to the action. We were about 40 minutes from the airport and approximately €30. Minutes walking distance to the accropolis, plaka, all bars and restaurants. We walked to the Temple of Zeus and the Parliament without any hassle.

Breakfast is fresh with plenty of selection and runs until 11 which is great for lazy people like me.

We had dinner on our first night in the rooftop restaurant which is also a bar. The view is breathtaking. Staff lovely food ok.

We stayed in two rooms as we stayed two nights then went to Santorini and returned for one night. Both rooms were small, comfortable and had everything you could need. The beds were slightly hard but I was well able to sleep.

All in all we couldn't have asked for any better than we got at the Hera. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Hotel Hera is very modern, clean and updated with marble bathroom, free internet, newspapers at lobby wide range of breakfast choices and very helpful english speaking staff. It got a great view of the acropolis at their garden terrace. Located right by
by the new acropolis museum, which is only open from 10-12 pm, free now as there are only 1-2 exhibits for you to view.

Location - at a residential area, with restaurants, post office, cafes within 1-2 radius block. for family travernas, check out drakou street, 2 blocks south of hotel (by singfrou-fix metro). very close to plaka, less than 3-5 mins and you are at the border of plaka (lower end) and the pedestrain street to acropolis. 3 mins to the acropolis metro station and 15-20 mins brisk walk to parliament building for changing of the guard. everything is within half hour walk, but metro is convenient to take (80 cents euro for 1 trip and 6 Euro to/fro airport).

The Hera hotel is a good choice do to its location at the Plaka old town area, within one block from the Acropolis metro station it is very easy to reach from the airport. Walk anywhere, Acropolis, old town, shops, restaurants. Located in a neighborhood location on a very narrow small street it is private without all the Athens traffic below your room or having to cross a busy street - and Athens has a lot of traffic. The location is the best plus! it is quaint clean and has a professional staff. Yes the halls are warm due to the controlled electricity usage (need your room card to start the air conditioner in the room), and the beds were hard (which is my major complaint) but we were in a non smoking room, free use of the computer, great breakfast included, a nice restaurant with a great view of the Acropolis at night, and there was no smell of smoke and in Athens that is remarkable!

Great hotel close to the acropolis. Wonderful rooftop terrace with spectacular nightime views of the parthenon. Excellent food! Wished could have stayed longer. Booked a single room which was small but had everything one could need. Very nice marble bathroom. Breakfast was included and was surprised to see hot items (eggs, bacon, sausage) on the menu as well as the standard greek fare. Highly recommend this hotel.

The Hera Hotel is located near the Plaka and Acropolis and is a great place to stay.

1. You can't ask for a better location to visit the Acropolis and Plaka/Monastiraki/Syntagma area. From the Akropoli Metro station to the hotel is a short walk to the south, the Plaka a short walk to the north and the Acropolis a short walk to the northwest. You can pick up the Tram to Glyfada in front of Syntagma to the north or the Fix station to the south.
2. Although the room was on the small side (I was in Room 103) it was very comfortable and clean. The air conditioning and television worked well and the water remained hot. The bed was firm. There is a small balcony. The bathroom is a nice size and has a good shower.
3. The rooftop restaurant has a fantastic view of the Acropolis and is a great place for a late night drink or dessert.
4. The included breakfast is bountiful: Eggs, bacon, yogurt, fruit, cereal, cakes, pastries, juice, coffee and any number of other things to get you going in the morning, and the breakfast room is smoke-free.
5. All areas of the hotel are very clean and well kept.
6. The front desk and support staff are friendly and helpful.
7. The hotel is quiet at night.

All in all my recent stay was close to perfect and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again on my next trip to Athens.

In 2006 my wife, teenage son and I had planned on a trip to Greece and we were to stay at the Ava Hotel. Foot surgery for my son cancelled those plans. When I contacted the Ava for our trip in '08, they had raised the price of their executive apartment (separate bedroom and living room with sofa sleeper) to 255 euros, which I though was way too much. So after many hours of searching for Athens hotels, I found three or four near the Acropolis that had connecting rooms, and I finally chose the Hera.
We had rooms 101 and 102, and it really worked out well. My son had his own room and bathroom. The rooms, I must say, are quite small, so if it is just one or two of you, you may not like it, but the connecting rooms worked fine for us. The bathrooms are nice, and thank goodness, the air conditioning worked just fine (it was in the middle 90's in Athens the six days we were there). There was no view, but the price for each room was 115 euros and because I paid in advance they reduced it to 107.50 per room per night. We went up and saw a junor suite on the fifth floor, but they wanted 255 euros for that (with Acropolis view and balcony), but that room wasn't that much bigger than ours.
We had no problems communicating with the front desk staff; they all spoke very good English. The breakfast was very good, served in a pleasant non-smoking room. Many choices and the room was air-conditioned. They have a restaurant and bar on the roof with a view of the Acropolis and Parthenon in particular. The food is a bit pricey, but if you choose carefully you won't break the bank. Better is to have dinner in nearby Plaka, and have an ouzo on the roof and admire the Parthenon lit up at night. Most drinks are in the 10 euro range, but ouzo was four something euros. The have a conference room (no air conditioning!) with internet access. The hotel is right across the street from the new Acropolis Museum (which is not open yet) and the Acropolis metro station. All in all, a solid, if not great hotel to stay.

Some tips: Whether you are arriving at the airport or the port, be smart and order a taxi. I used Athens Direct...for 38 euros the driver was waiting for us at the airport and drove us straight to the hotel. We also used them to take us to the airport and the driver was right on time to pick us up. You can e-mail Stathis, who communicates in perfect English, at Stathis.Perdikis@AthensDirect.gr.
The Hera is four short blocks from the pedestrian street below the Acropolis. Regardless of where you stay, to enter the Acropolis enter on the south side, on the right. That way you walk by the Theater of Dionysious, and this entrance is far less crowded than the main one. If it is 95 degrees like it was when we were there, get up to the top by 9AM to avoid some of the heat and crowds. For the best view of the Acropolis and the Parthenon walk to the nearby Philopppou Hill.
Probably the best restaurant in Plaka for the setting, food, and the prices is Diogenes, next to the Lysicrates monument. Many of the restaurants will try to pull you in...in the case of Taverna Plaka in the heart of Plaka, let them as the food was very good and it is a fun place.
If the thought of the Natioinal Museum is overwhelming, try the Benaki Museum, off Syntagma Sq, opposite the National Garden (which is also worth a visit). The museum has exhibits on the history of Greece, from the earliest ciivilizations through the War of Independence with the Turks. Great museum, and a splendid cafe with good prices on the roof. They even have non-smoking tables inside, which is a rariity in smoke crazy Greece.

  • Liked — The location; the connecting rooms, the view from the roof
  • Disliked — The rooms were on the smallish side.
