There's little of it left, but because the authorities have resisted building anything next to it, it stands in a large open space and looks all the more impressive. We missed getting closer to it than the fence because we kept forgetting that the site closes at 3pm in the winter, but we did spend a lot of time gazing down on it from the restaurant/bar in our hotel (The Athens Gate): lovely!

“One of my favorite sites!”
Reviewed 8 January 2012

One of my favorite sites in Athens...There is something so regal about the remaining columns from this one gigantic temple (larger than the Parthenon!)...Worth taking some time to sit on one of the benches and contemplate the columns!

“Part of Ancient Greece”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

While there is not much left of this temple left it is worth seeing. As you look at the site it is easy to visualize what this temple must have been like at the height of the Greek civilization. It can also be seen from the Acropolis. Worth spending some time to visit.

“Temple of Zeus”
Reviewed 6 January 2012

Temple of Zeus...is a beautiful temple on top of a hill near the Acropolis. When you exit the Acropolis follow the signs for the Agora (ancient market) once you are in the Agora it is pretty easy to find as it is the only large temple you can see on top of the hill. A path will lead you up...the one on the right is narrow and a bit overgrown, the one on the left is wider, more flat areas and a great viewing spot about 2/3rds of the way up. It is a fantastic view out over the Agora and well worth the time. The temple itself is one of the more intact in Athens...it even has interior walls and most of its roof....unfortunately you are not allowed to enter the temple but it is still stunning.

The Temple of Zeus must have been amazing in Ancient Greece. The ruins indicate how huge this place really was. Its easy to get a ticket for the Hop on Hop off bus to get there. We went on a Sunday in winter, when all the sites are free to enter.
