Owner description: This beautiful oasis offers a soothing respite of greenery from the big city with many benches for picnicking, cafes, duck ponds and a small zoo.

The National Garden is to the right of the Parliament building.

Unlike parks in other parts of Europe, there are almost no open spaces at all –the entire park is laid out in cool walkways under the trees; shade from the sun is very important in Greece and it is a peaceful refuge of 15.5 hectares of greenery.

TIP: This Oasis hides a duck pond, a small zoo, a Botanical Museum, a small café, and a Children’s Library and playground.

Can't think of one positive thing to say about our visit, was very disappointed. We visited in September, hardly a flower to be seen, all the flower beds dry and full of weeds, not well maintained at all and don't even get me started on the appalling conditions the animals were kept in.

The only positive thing to say is that it is a green escape in the middle of Athens. There were plenty of trees but no flowers at all. The worst part was the horrendous zoo that contained animals living in terrible conditions.

When we visited in June last year they parks were quite poorly maintained (fountains turned off, drying lakes, unkept, dead grass, littered) which is a shame as it has so much potential to rival London or Madrid's leafy green parks. Next to Syntagma Square it is worth a visit if you are seeking a picnic space or some shade during summer but otherwise, I’d give this place a miss.

It was a gloriously hot day and the shade was very much appreciated. We being English wanted to sit in the shade and have a nice little gossip, exchanging stories, laughing and joking, so we naturally sat down beneath the blossom tunnels.
After about 30 or so minutes, my friend pointed out that there was a man standing in the bushes with his shorts round his ankles and his shirt above his stomach. The stranger was staring at us and committing an awful offence whilst doing so.
We did not react to the situation as a Louis Theroux documentary had taught us that these 'tossers' 'get off' on the victims response. So walked away in a nonchalant manor.
We found a policeman who was very helpful, and quite surprised, and then went on to visit more attractions such as Zeus' Temple and the Acropolis Museum. Both of which were very enjoyable. The only difference being is that we had become very weary of bushes and fat men wearing shorts.
