“Highly recommend Exarchion Hotel, Athens”
Reviewed 24 October 2013

Very good value for money in a fascinating counter-culture/alternative neighbourhood close to the city center. Excellent restaurants and bars are within walking distance, the metro a 5-10 minute walk, and Syntagma Square and Monastiraki Flea Market a 10-15 minute walk away.
Exarchia, the area, is similar to the old East Village of New York, The Mission district of San Francisco, and Kreuzberg in Berlin. It sits between the University of Athens and the Politechnion and is home to students, immigrants, Greek families of different economic strata, restaurants, cafes, computer shops, used vinyl and CD shops, guitar shops, used bookshops, boutiques, clubs, bars, punks and anarchists, While perhaps not for everyone, I felt completely at home here and would recommend it to anyone a bit adventurous or interested in alternative culture, street art/graffiti, etc.
The hotel receptionist was very helpful and friendly, let us check out late as our flight was delayed (without an extra charge), and breakfast was decent.
Very glad I stayed here!!

We spent 2 nights at the hotel at the begin and end of a cruise the location is very good with a 5minute walk to the metro but not a good idea with heavy cases. We found out later a taxi from the metro is about 3 euro. The room was clean and tidy with a good view of the mountains , breakfast was very nice. A good place for good value.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 6th floor

The hotel is average and very basic. The neighbourhood is very seedy with less than desirable people hanging out in the streets and park outside the hotel. The room was clean but it was quite noisy, the service was ok. The breakfast was poor.
I recommend using this hotel for only 1 night, we simply used it as a gateway from the Greek islands to the Athens airport the following day. I would not want to spend any more time in this neighbourhood. If your game enough to venture out at night - directly across the road is a great gyro shop.
This is not a neighbourhood you would like to take your family or kids- a lot of adult shops, gun shops, very seedy people and seedy atmosphere.

It was ok for our requirements though.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher level floor- we stayed on level 1 and the street noise was quite loud. Don't pa...

I stayed alone for one night in Athens during August 2013, and this was a pretty convenient and damn cheap place. Not far from the centre and other attractions in Athens. The staff was quite helpful and pointed out the main attractions, the way to get there and also gave tips on good places to eat traditional food in and around the area. Overall very good value for money. Rooms are nice and clean too.

Room Tip: Cheap and good, pretty good location too if you are interested in city seeing. But if you want rela...

We stayed here for two nights and I couldn't wait to leave The place. Hotel in general was ok- nice guy at the reception, he was very helpful, room was clean and tidy, and there were a few restaurants to choose from just in few steps from the hotel. One thing I didn't like - I didn't feel safe there. It is kind of area where at every step you can see the guys with long hair, wearing black clothes, leather jackets, driving motorbikes and hanging in groups. Even walk to a restaurant didn't feel safe. We were walking past a little park full of big groups of men who were staring at us as like we were aliens. One night they had a fight and were screaming that all street could here them.
I definitely wouldn't go there again but just because of the lack of safety. But really - you can say the same thing about many areas in Athens. Even in the middle in the city you have streets which you regret you walked there. So many streets are full of ugly graffiti and weird people hanging around and staring at you.
But this may be just me feeling this way. So many people probably wouldn't care about such things. Especially if you're travelling in groups.

My three children and I stayed in a family room (two connected rooms) on June 15, 16, 17, and 18 June 2013. We were happy with the motel. It was clean and fairly nice. The breakfast was okay. The best thing about the motel was the staff.

Parking can be an issue in the area of the motel. Somehow the motel staff on duty found me a parking space every night. I was most impressed. The neighborhood is a bit seedy but it is more of a party type area, not so much crime ridden. We noticed a lot of nightlife but we never felt threatened or unsafe.

If you need clothes washed there is a very good laundry straight up the street from the front door. We had three loads of clothes done by those guys and it was cheap and fast. There are several spots to eat within a block of the motel. There is also a place to eat right at the motel. I would recommend this motel.

Room Tip: I think a higher floor would be quieter.
