“Great hotel, good location and very good value”
Reviewed 2 November 2010

This hotel has received a number of reviews based on its location. There is a feeling it is in an unsafe area (or at least that is what I expected before I stayed there, based on TripAdvisor reviews).

Certainly, there is some evidence of the area being a little 'edgy'. After all, you are in a major capital city so you are likely to see some things that don't happen in a cosy suburb ! My teenage son and I spent a week here and we witnessed a couple of drug deals (kids pulling up in cars, small packets exchanged for money). But that's it.

The whole area north of Monistiraki square is a honeycomb of small streets. Some are quaint and have lovely Tavernas waiting to surprise you. But on others you will find, throughout the day and more so in the evening and night, knots of mostly young men, of diverse ethnic backgrounds, hanging around. This can feel threatening but at no time in the week we were there were we actually threatenend by anyone. More to the point, we were obviously tourists, and might be expected to have expensive cameras and money on us, but not once we we even asked for money, let alone with menaces. We passed by, minding our own business and no one attempted to stop us or even address us.

It is understandable that in a foreign city, 'confronted' by gangs of young males, some people might feel frightened. In some of the reviews, there is a sense that these young men are threatening because they are immigrants. Actually,we saw a lot more evidence of young entrepreneurs, working really hard, all day and night to succeed in difficult economic circumstances. A more typical immigrant story. The biggest nuisance was having to step around the piles of empty cardboad boxes outside the numerous shoe shops in the area !

The hotel itself is a little basic, but it is good value. Fantastic views of the Acropolis and really well located for all the attractions you would want to see (easy walking distance).. The staff were really helpful and attentive, and very friendly. Rooms are clean and serviced daily. Air conditioning is available but this is an extra charge.

Apart form the mosquitoes, we were very happy at the Evripides and would dfeinitely stay there again.

As we first walked to the hotel from the metro station, we thought that we had to go through the "slum" to get to the hotel, however the hotel was placed in the slum. Our view from our balcony was an abandoned hotel with screaming windows and spooky sounds. The pictures are greatful to the hotel. The streets are full of chinese people moving boxes all night in large vans and drugdealers doing business across the street. Do not go out on your own at night! Right across the street there is a nice shop with cheap bottled water, sodas and snacks hosted by a nice old man.
The balcony on the roof has a great view and it is equiped with a great bar. From here you can view both the Acropolis and hobos living in cardboard boxes.

Five minutes walk from Monastariki metro station and the Fleamarket, 15 minutes to the Acropolis. Clean and friendly. The area is a little "interesting" to say the least, but safe enough. The street outside was noisy and the aircon was extra. Rubbish breakfast. But cheap and cheerful and I would recommend for a night or two.

I have to say that the woman in charge of the hotel is not the most pleasant person! We had a problem with our reservation and she wasn't willing to help us at all!!! The hotel is located in a very scary area full of immigrants. Whatever you do, please don't walk alone at night in that area! We were back at the hotel by 10pm. It is however located close to Monastiraki metro station (5-10 minutes) and you have a great view of the Acropolis from the hotel. Breakfast is included and it is a continental breakfast with boiled eggs, bread, cheese, yogurt, cereal, fruits, etc. The elevators are pretty scary, they seem pretty old. As for the room, it was cozy and the air conditioner only worked for our room if you went into the bathroom it was as if you're walking into a sauna!

I've stayed at "The Ripper" four or five times in the past three years. Excellent hotel with great views from the breakfast area. Yes the area is dodgy but the rest district is only five minutes away and there's a safe route via Epikouros St., right then left. But what worries me now is the hotel has gone grey market. charging 5 Euros for AC. It's not on the hotel bill and of course in Athens it's beyond essential. The second time I stayed this summer I asked for it to be included in the same price I had paid through booking.com and it was--but if you check the sites you wouldn't know to ask. A shame as this hotel already has the area's rep working against it, and it's great value for money.

I stayed here on a trip watching my team Everton in Athens in December. We just needed somewhere to put our bags and sleep and not much else. The hotel is located around 10 minutes walk to Monistariki station & square, which will take you anywhere in the city on the metro.

The owner was very helpful and so was the lady on reception. I have never had such helpful hotel staff in my time travelling. There is a bar on the higher floors which serves wine and bottled Mythos. If you go to the outside bit in the bar the views of the city are magnificent. You can see the Acropolis lit up at night and the other Ancient sights.

If you get hungry there is a Greek restaurant/take away directly opposite where I ate delicious pork chops and chips.

I've read a few reviews of the hotel and there are a few that say the area is not safe and intimidating. I would say that the area is ok, sure there are a few Vietnamese/Africans around but name me a major European capital city that does not have immigration. If you are a lady staying on your own then maybe you shouldn't stay here but for all other people this hotel is fine.

Tip: Go to Mikrolimano fishing port if you get time. Excellent for fresh fish meals. I think if I remember rightly you have to go to Neo Faliro station and walk from there, it's not far. Look on google. It is the nicest part of the city and the bars there are quite upmarket.

This is a good 3 star hotel with good facilities and rooms. The biggest problems is that the area is not very good especially at night. The area is very dark at night with a number of people on the street.
Getting to hotel is not easy with the nearest metro station about 15 minute walk.
But if are looking for a 3 star hotel near to Athens CBD you could do a lot worse and pay a lot more.
We found that most of the sights of Athens can be accessed from the hotel without too much problems.
