Its a huge market with open shops either side selling souvenirs, clothing etc. Its perfect for buying gifts and after you hunt through shops that sell the same things you will find cheaper prices. Anything from statues of Greek Gods, mugs, key rings, jewellery, t-shirts, monuments, alcohol, food, soaps, hats etc. I visited twice and the only down side is the shop owners pounce on you, asking questions trying to sell you anything. If they ask if your looking for something In particular say no or they will never let you leave!

Lots of vendors, tavernas and a great bar- 360- that overlooks the Acropolis. Nice to check out once but very touristy so you will get bored of it but it's great for a drink or dinner.

You sit down to dinner, and you get an immigrant every minute with imitation wrist watches, lighters, illegal cigarettes, you name it and every minute you have to send them away saying no thank, then your dinner turns into a nightmare considering also that these immigrants have never been checked healthwise. The so beautiful square has been turned into a filthy setting just like Karachi or Lagos or Ghana with hundreds of mainly immigrants wandering around, sitting on the sidewalks, with street sellers at your every step and of course no police around., Unless this african setting is considered a tourist attraction for those who take the risk, we would rather say no thank you. Athens is great, but this area is not what it used to be. In many ways, it is a disgrace.

You can easily combine it with your walk around Plaka and Thiseion. Some might find it too touristic though... In any event it is worth a short walk and you could then check out Agia Eirinis square with all its nice cafes and small bistros (full of locals)...

There is something for everyone here - you can spend all day having a forage around enjoying the sights, sounds and smells. The Sunday market is the busiest and biggest but there is something going on every day to enjoy. Just be aware as in all of Athens that there is no public toilet to be found - well we couldn't find any - so take your opportunity when you stop for a drink and use their toilets or you'll be doing a mad dash back to your hotel!!!!
