We stayed in the Hotel Alma (having not checked Trip Advisor first because I wasn't the one booking), and to be honest, its not a great hotel.
The location is in a reasonably poor but improving area, but due to the high number of students and anarchists in Omonia, there is often trouble. On the night we arrived, a protest had turned sour and the taxi driver was adamant he wouldn't drop us at the hotel. After some arguing, he dropped us round the back but for the next couple of days, there was tear gas (or some other chemical) in the air that burned our eyes.
The hotel itself is functional, but the rooms are small, the air con did almost nothing and meant that we had to endure the constant noise of Athens traffic as we had to sleep with the door to the balcony open.
Breakfast is the usual continental fare, but I am sure you could find better breakfasts and in fact better hotels, in better locations for less money.
