“Great service, and great place to sleep.”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

The location was perfect for visiting major attractions in Athens. The rooftop bar was amazing with a great view of the Acropolis. The piano player made every effort to play the songs people wanted to hear, and even spent his own time to find sheet music to play a requested song he didn't know. The bartenders were friendly, and remembered what our favorite drinks were when we returned. The restaurant at the rooftop bar had great food, as well. The breakfast was far better than any breakfast you could find in the U.S.

The hotel is pretty average, our room was a good size for a couple. The bed was quite comfortable. The hotel itself is in a fairly good location, a 10-minute walk from the base of the Acropolis and Plaka. The breakfast was also okay although the coffee was surprisingly weak for Greece. It tasted like diluted American coffee which meant it tasted of nothing. The juicer looked interesting but was just too exhausting to contend with first thing in the morning.

Easily the hotel’s best feature is the rooftop bar and restaurant: largely open to the air, it has splendid views of the Acropolis, better than average food, and benefits hugely from Nicholas, wine expert and cocktail master, who combines the tasks of barman and waiter with skill, charm, and unfailing good humour.

Most distinctive feature is the odd décor in many of the public rooms: “Byzantine rococo”? Gold and silver glass mosaic, huge metal ornaments, and glass studded textiles. Mercifully, the bedrooms are 1980s bland. Harder to forgive are the unyielding mattresses and cheap pillows. My single was small, with a narrow window, but clean. I could never get the TV to work (though the maid apparently could), and the beverage tray was only erratically replenished, leaving me one morning with only camomile tea to start the day. The bathroom is adequate, though the towels are small. The lifts come very quickly – not always the case in hotels. On reflection, if I have to go back I’ll check the laundry bills more carefully.

Breakfast offers plenty of choice, with efficient staff. During my extended business stay, there was a range of receptionists, most of them pleasant and helpful. No taxi rank, but the Callirhoe is on a busy road, and it’s usually possible to get one reasonably quickly. The surrounding area is dominated, like much of Athens, by a truly astonishing number of motorbike shops and garages.

I’d return for the rooftop bar, but for little else.

My wife and I stayed here for the first three nights of our Greek honeymoon and were very satisfied. The best feature of this hotel is its location. Aside from our Acropolis tour we walked everywhere. We had no problems navigating through Plaka, Constitution Square/ Parliament area, New Acropolis Museum, Temple of Zeus, and the Theatre of Dionysos. Hotel is close to city transit but we ran out of time before we needed it. Restaurants are abundant in Plaka so finding a place to eat was always close. The area was very safe and we were able to walk around freely at quite late hours and not feel in danger. Service of the staff was always friendly and pleasant. Food at the rooftop restaurant is very good and has a really amazing view. Our only real complaint was that the beds were a little stiff for our liking and our room was directly under the rooftop restaurant which got a little loud the one night. This was a very good value and we would have no issues staying here again.

Stayed at the Athenian for two nights in June 2014. Overall, I would rate the experience as satisfactory. The best thing about this hotel is probably the location. Rooms were small and poorly decorated. Hotel staff forgot to clean our room on the second day. Overall, just OK.

We only spent two nights at this hotel, but I would definitely stay there again. It is very close to Acropolis and Plaka. Service was good. Best of our breakfasts. View from hotel restaurant/bar was of the Acropolis which was gorgeous at night. Had tissues (a first in our travels) and good hair dryer. We did not eat at the restaurant as it was close to other restaurants and shopping. We rate this boutique hotel as 4 star and highly recommend it. I would stay there again if I ever get back to Athens. We did not rate the value of the hotel as it was included in our tour. We loved Athens.

We spent a lot of time exploring Athens so barely spent time in our hotel - so it was great for what we needed. It was clean and central - walking distance to the hop on/off bus stop too. The view from the rooftop bar was lovely.
