“Scary!!!”

I'm staying at this hotel right now and I'm also looking for a better place. The hotel is ok, friendly and helpfully staff at the front desk, but my room has not been clean very well, no air conditioning, just a super old fashion one that doesn't work, super cold water and on top of that I just realized I'm in the "hood", prostitutes, drug dealers, drug sellers, drug addicts, beggars, weird and disgusting people all around. I have seen too much just walking 3 blocks from the hotel to the metro. Definitely this is a SCARY place...

Informed us of dinner, when i came down for dinner was told they only had 1 food on food on the menu, being a moslem did not want to eat meat an asked for veg food, but staff member could not arrange it, so spoke at reception an a fine gentleman by the name coastas helped us, an provided us with non meat food. Hotel was close to metro tram etc an short hop from iconic sites etc. On the last day a staff member at the reception was rude an helpful, the women never smilled

We arranged to stay at the Ionis Hotel in mid-June. It is a hot month in Athens.
This review will mirror the website. The pictures of the facilities are pretty truthful, there is a large marble floored lobby with two computers for free use and wi-fi for guests. There lifts are very small so if you are claustrophobic you will need to take the stairs. There is a large dining room on the 1st floor where a pretty average breakfast is served - bread, cake, jam, fruit, yoghurt, eggs and questionable sausages. The coffee is very good. There is also a large lounge with a big tv and a bar.
The location is claimed to be 'in the historical and commercial center of Athens', but is in fact a good walk from the 'tourist' areas. The acropolis is a good 30 minute walk. The Psiri disrict is closest with several places to eat. The area that the hotel is actually in is not a desirable part of Athens, and we woke up to the sounds from the street below. The balcony we had looks over the street and into the opposite office block. The balcony does have double sliding doors that seal out most light/sound, so shut these at night.
The photo of the bedroom on the main website is of the family room. Our bedroom was, however, small and dark. As a party of 3 we were put in a bedroom with 3 large single beds (triple) and a lot of other furniture so there was little room to move around. They could stand to move out the desk and chair. The bathroom has a hairdryer (if you can bring yourself to apply heat in Athens). There is a hand held shower over the bath, toilet and mirror. Bring your own toiletries as the ones provided are not great. There was a small television with some channels in a variety of languages - English was BBC World News. Finally the promise of air-con is not a lie, but not efficent.

On the whole our experience was ok for a three night stay, but if we were staying longer we may have moved elsewhere.

The hotel needs a renovation, the staff is not very gently, is unacceptable to not have a modern air condition but a kind of this from the 80's and when I asked them how I can use it the answer was that we don't use it if the temperature is not over 28 C !!!!!!! Is clean and the breakfast could be better!!! the area is not good but is not hotel's business!!! i don;t know if I will book again, not at the summer days!!!

I recently stayed 6 nights here, and I wish I spent the extra money to stay at a location in a better area, with a better breakfast, a place that smelled better, and was just a better place. Days are bad, nights are way worse. First experience (9 am in thre morning) was a kid cooking up some heroin. The hookers appeared to be old women (or men). Once inside the hotel, the facilities are ok, JUST OK. As an American, it is tough to get used to the cigarette smoke everywhere (the lobby, the elevators, the hallways, the room, the lounge, but worst of all the towels) ick. The breakfast was poor at best. There are no restaurants or bars in the area that are safe to enter. While it is convienet from the Metro, you will have to walk the gauntlet of undesirables to get to your room. Every night was an early night because I did not feel safe walking the gaunlet. I am a tall, confident man, who has travelled the world extensively, and this was the most uncomforatable I've ever been. YouR visit will be better if you stay in a better hotel.

Room Tip: AVOID AT ALL COSTS. You will thank me later.

I stayed here for 2 nights in February 2011, after having a horrible experience at the Ionis' sister hotel, the Apollo Hotel across town. The Apollo was undergoing construction, and the conditions there were so miserable I finally cried uncle and asked to be moved, anywhere. They finally relented, and drove me to their sister hotel, the Ionis Hotel. The Ionis is located in a dodgy part of Athens, and I understand that makes some travelers wary. I didn't have any trouble there, even when venturing out at 10 pm in search of a Gyro. It is located in a rough part of town, but don't let that dissuade you. It's a pretty good hotel, and for the money, I think it's a good value. It's a couple blocks walk to the Metro station, maybe 5 minutes on foot, and in the morning, you can see the streets come alive with all manner of Greek custom and flair. Inside the hotel, the large lobby has free internet on computers for guests to use, and the front desk staff is very helpful and accommodating. They speak passable English, and the rooms (my room, at least) had a large balcony, and 2 large beds. Plenty of space, and it came with a nice bathroom. Clean and well appointed, the room was well cared for and it was a pleasure to sleep there. I had a good stay here, a pity I didn't start my journey here instead of the under-construction Apollo Hotel. It's in the heart of Athens, and you can experience the daily life of Greece all around you. I like that sort of thing.

Room Tip: Ask for a Balcony view, of the bustling street below.

The place where the hotel is located is absolutely the worst place in Athens. It was reflecting the economic and political situation of Greece unfortunately. Drug sellers, thieves and prostitutes were everywhere.
