“We went back twice!”
Reviewed 12 December 2013

After spending many days in Athens we found that this was our best choice and went back to eat here again. The restaurants in the Plaka and other tourist zones do not deliver as nice a service or healthy food as this delightful place. The menu choices were small but every item had fresh good health in mind. The price was very reasonable and the service was friendly. It was quiet on weekdays but busier with a more trendy crowd on the weekend.

“Good food.........poor service.”
Reviewed 2 December 2013

Evening meal for 3.
Quite central location that looks promising from the outside. We did not make a reservation that seemed to surprise, even stress, the owner/manager. We were shown to our table, presented with a glass of complimentary water and given the menu (available also in English) without even a smile or some indication of gratitude. On ordering our meal he at last managed to appear more relaxed and smile. While we were there it was clear the place was never going to get full.

We ordered a bottle of wine and asked for some bread until our first course arrived. We got a brown paper bag with 6 slices of dry bread......no butter........no olive oil.
Sadly the dish I most wanted was unavailable that night.

For some weird reason the kitchen door was left wide open where the chef was clearly visible. Not sure if this was to "show off" to clients, as only our table could see in anyway.

The menu is a small varied selection of international flavors. The wine list is also very small.
We ordered a 2nd bottle of wine as our order was taking its time. When the food arrived it was very good, though one of us was not as pleased with their choice. The cous cous salad was delicious.

To be fair I would give the food 4 stars as it was genuinely well prepared and very tasty.
Sadly, however, by Athenian standards the service and atmosphere is well below average, 2 stars. This is up to the manager to improve his act; playing a bit of jazz as background is not enough; the place needs more personality.

I would however like to return to try the dish that was not available that night. I just hope the service will have improved.

“Very good food, friendly staff, small price”
Reviewed 15 November 2013 via mobile

Makalo is a nice small restaurant. The food is fresh and home made. I ordered a salad, main course and two glasses of wine for only 22 euro. The fresh made beef burger was excellent. Also the red Greek wine was delicious and was served in large glasses.

“A delicious place to eat drink and relax in the centre of Athens !”
Reviewed 5 November 2013

Makalo is a great choice while you are in athens , its near to all the hot spots of the city centre and where you can have a break from the crouwdy Athens.
The place is pleasant, with a choice of relaxing colours in the decoration that helps you escape from the gray of a big city.
The food is absulutelly excellent with a variety and delicious suprices! Pantelis is the chef and one of the most talented in Athens. For sure this is the main reason to visit Makalo, if you are searching for something to eat that is fresh tastefull and with logic pricing .
The coctails are amazing and another main reason to visit Makalo.
In the service of Makalo is where you find Nikos, happy and adorable. He is the person you want to be friends with !! Ps order from him his special lemonade...you will go back for it !!!
Makalo is great choice in athens in every aspect .
