This stylish urban mid-price hotel was a stop-over gamble after ten days of Santorini luxury,.
The beds are comfortable, the aircon works, breakfast is comprehensive (artichoke hearts for breakfast, work the orange-squishing machine yourself if you like, and I like to mix in peach juice?) Then there is practically no reason to leave the hotel rooftop, until it is time to stroll for ten minutes down a pedestrian street to Plaka or Monastiraki. The front-of-house and the cocktail waiters know their stuff. You have stunning views across the poolside sun-worshippers to the illuminated Acropolis (despite the neighbour's annoying lift shafts). Free wi-fi, good coffee and all-day cooks, (and the odd expensive cocktail) do it for me.
Outside, Athens is feeling the pinch, with many closed buildings, but the hotel's untrendy location close to the university - close to everything central, indeed - help the moderate prices. By the central meat market, a sight worth seeing in itself, there is an amazing junkshop where the souvenirs of two hundred years are literally piled high. You can simply choose not to turn right outside the hotel, where cheerful working girls ply the oldest profession - just as inside the smartest hotels.
In twenty years, I bet this whole area will follow the lead of the Fresh Hotel, with prices to match.
