Very few know the real history. It is worth spending a few minutes to see the graphs and read the history of this monument. It is part of the past walls, there was one of the entrances. Located at a very wuiet and pleasant spot in Plaka, one of the hot-spots of past-Athens neighbours. You can rest enjoying a coffee or an ouzo in a cafe, staring the ruins all arround with the monument taking its central, glorious position.

I have been passing by this staple of the Athenian Plaka for years, but I get a little thrill yet, everytime I see it. Centuries ago the city would have been littered with such choregic monuments, which were set up to commemorate an aristocratic patron of a theatre production won the top prize. This one used to be part of the library of the Capuchin monastery that was once on the site.

It's just under the Acropolis at the entrance of the old city and gives you a feeling of what it must have been like then to walk

Marvelous restoration job of what may be the prime choregic monument in Athens.
