Owner description: The unsuspected visitor of the historic center of Athens cannot miss the hundreds of colorful bottles and lights that decorate the walls of "Brettos". “BRETTOS” is the oldest distillery in Athens. It started operating for the first time back in 1909 at the ground level of an Athenian old mansion in the heart of Plaka. At those premises, his founder Mr Michael Brettos, started producing ouzo, brandy and few liqueur flavors, from the old time classics like cherry and pepermint to the most distinct ones like citrus and masticha, using old family recipes from Smyrni (Izmir, Turkey). When demand started rising more that expected he had to relocate the distillery to Kallithea and operate the small shop on Kydathineon street only as a liquor shop and at the same time as a bar where tourists as well as local could taste and buy any liqueur they wished for. After all these decades “Brettos” distillery and bar is still the best place to have a few drinks after work, after a good meal, or just before you go to sleep. Without any lifestyle codes, with soft music coming from a small radio forgotten on one of the wooden shelves, “Brettos” is the perfect place is you wish to get away form everyday life and have a chat with your friends. The only thing that could surprise you are the flashes coming from the cameras of all shorts of tourist that visit the store daily. The only thing you should be certain of is the fact that you can easily fall in love with “Brettos” for its special atmosphere, both low-key and attractive, the authenticity and the friendliness of its owners.

“Great spot for a drink”

Great place for some good wine, cocktails or ouzo! Not to expensive, and the staff is really friendly! Make sure you try the triple distilled ouzo!

“Hidden gem with an amazing atmosphere!”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

When visited Athens for the first time (2010) I passed by this little gem thinking "No way, this place is so funky and coll, it must be over the top expenssive!" . Boy, I was so damn wrong!
While on our honey moon in September 2013 my husband and I decided that we should give it a try. Thank God, we didi. The atmosphere takes your breath away., Although it is supposed to be small, the place doesn't have this feeling. Instead it's a vivid, quite hip place with great, friendly staff and really reasonable prices. Two of its walls are full with a great variety of liqueur of any kind you can think of (and even beyond). When we asked to try one of them, the bartender gave us free shots so we can make up our minds if this was the right drink for us. It was.We returned there for our last evening in Athens. And still to this day talk about going back there whenever we visit Athens again.
Absolute must when strolling around the Plaka district!

“Must go when in Athens”
Reviewed 17 February 2014

A great Bar. We loved the liqueurs and ouzo and went there a few times on our trip. We were there off-season so the vibe was very relaxed.

“Amazing bar- WINE bar- the best in Athens”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

150 wine labels, liquers, ouzo, tsipouro of 3 qualities.
What can you say more? Unique.
Coctail prices are not cheap, but either expensive. You can drink with 3 euros or with no matter what. Definitely worth visiting when in Athens. If you are wine addictive a-MUST-visit.

“Well Worth Checking Out”
Reviewed 1 February 2014

This is something a little unusal , worth a visit to try different types of tradional greek drinks, I went during Jan so not very busy and pretty relaxed with everyone having time to chat etc. I imagine it can be pretty crowded during the summer but well worth a visit.
