Reviews on this site encouraged me to book this hotel. In fact this is not a boutique hotel, just an average small city hotel for tourists. Location is great for the sights of Athens, safe too. What we disliked is the air con noise - quite loud so you cannot really sleep while it is working.

After spending many hours on-line looking for just the right place for my budget and sensibilities, I ended up booking a room at the Athos Hotel. I do not like big modern or funky cheap places - what I wanted was a clean, under-stated but nicely & cleanly appointed place that was located near the heart of Athens. This is exactly what I found at this wonderful little hotel!! My room was clean and tastefully decorated (i.e. plain but refined-good little frames of art, AC, good shower.) The hotel is located on a dark side street with a empty lot w/ trash across the street, but it was just typical of a big city, and just around the corner were all the streets that led out to all the fun and important areas in the Plaka. I was able to walk everywhere with the help of a good street map! The price for the room was appropriate although the breakfast was too expensive and not that great (but good yogurt & coffee.) The most amazing place in the hotel is the Fabulous View from the roof-top patio on the top floor, which is easily accessible if you ask for a key from the front desk. I would take my coffee up in the little elevator every morning (and a refreshment every evening) to just take in the perfect view of the Acropolis. The staff was reserved but very helpful. As a single woman traveling alone, I felt safe and very comfortable at the Athos Hotel.
P.S. I think the top (6th?) floor room is really nice for a price - and a great view! Quiet & romantic!

  • Liked — View of Acropolis from roof-top patio, quiet clean room w/ AC, location for price.
  • Disliked — Breakfast (too $$)

For our 2+week Greece holiday, all accommodations were booked via the Internet based on information provided on hotel websites and recommendations on this site and Fodor’s (which did not feature this hotel). On 4/17/07, we confirmed our reservation for a Superior room at the Athos Hotel for a four night stay in late September and early October, 2007 with Nina Gotsis, the hotel manager. The Athos’ website and confirmation e-mails stated the following: “The advantages of the Superior rooms are the greater comfort and the private balconies with the enchanting view of the Acropolis.”

Upon check-in, we were disappointed to find that our Superior room had an Acropolis view, but only after going to the far corner of our balcony and looking around the corner. When I brought this issue to Nina’s attention, she said that no other rooms with an Acropolis view were available, but we were free to use the Roof Garden. During the last two nights of our stay, the door to access the Roof Garden was locked at 8 PM because the adjacent room was rented. I requested an adjustment to our room rate from Nina based on two unfulfilled promises, which she refused to consider.

The positive aspects of the Athos are the support staff (Mary and Nicolas) and its location convenient to the Acropolis, the Plaka, and Syntagma Square. If you stay at the Athos, the White Horse taverna, owned by Marco, is great for AM coffee and breakfast/dinner.

My husband and I, brother-in-law, and in-laws spent four nights at the Athos. Upon our arrival, I met Mary who is the evening hotel manager. My inlaws were given a large room on the 4th, my BIL had the "penthouse" small room on the 6th floor and we had a medium size room on the 2nd. The following morning we met Nina and she gave us a bigger room on the 2nd floor. Accommodations were clean and comfortable. Housekeeping does a great job maintaining the hotel clean. Breakfast was 8 Euros and is really not worth the money, but it was convenient. The elevator in the hotel is a real trip. It barely fits two adults-one person with luggage. Like most people previously mentioned, there is an awesome view from the top floor, especially at night when the Acropolis is lit. The street the hotel is on is a little funky as the stores outside the hotel are closed and boarded up and at night there is not too much street light illuminating - felt like walking in a dark alley. However, I never felt unsafe, but it can give you the willies. The location of the hotel is within walking distance to several metro lines and many plakas. We walked to the Acropolis and several of the Agoras. We all enjoyed our stay and highly recommend the Athos.

The owner and her son, Nina and Nikos were incredible. We stayed at their hotel for about a week in January. The rooms were very clean and the location was in the Plaka area, where there are great restaurants and a lot going on. But the Athos Hotel is just off the busiest parts which made it also a quiet place to stay. The very best part of our stay though, were Nina and Nikos. They took such great care of us! In fact, it nearly felt like we were with family members while we were there. They assisted us with setting up our tours and, as we didn't speak the language there, that was invaluable. Greece is a stunningly beautiful place, but these people made the trip for us. We would most definitely stay with them again, and hope to do so someday.

The room on the top floor had a great view of the acropolis from the window. The roof garden was directly outside the window as well, so you could hear whenever people were out there (and needed to close the windows if someone was..so they couldn't see in). The bathroom was of good size & had a shower door so no water runoff in the bathroom. The room itself was tiny, barely enough room to fit our 2 suitcases. The safe didn't seem to lock (but we didn't put too much time into figuring it out.) The price seemed a bit steep for the small room, but I guess you are paying for the view. Breakfast is not included.

Location was excellent, 5 minute walk to both Syntagma & Monistiraki stations. Excellent food within walking distance and a fridge in the room to hold water. I guess we would stay again for an overnight due to the location and ease of getting to airport & port from there. Plus walking distance to Plaka & acropolis view.

The Athos is in a great, central location between Syndagma square and Monastiraki. Within walking distance to many sites. Hotel staff were very friendly...every staff member quickly matched our faces to our room number so we felt that they "knew" us. First we had a standard room on a lower floor, which was tiny but very clean. On the later half of our stay we had an Acropolis View room on an upper floor. This room was much bigger and nicer, particularly the bathroom, which was worlds bigger than the first. The balcony with acropolis view was very nice. We had no specific complaints about the hotel, everything was in working order and as we booked. What is questionable is whether the Athos is "worth" the price. The standard room was 115E which comes to 135E with taxes. The Acropolis View room was 135E which comes to about 150E with tax. This did NOT include breakfast, which was 8E and didn't seem at all worth it considering there are many pastry shops in the area that offer much better value. I have not stayed anywhere else in Athens so do not have anything to compare with, but I imagine one could find a better deal.
