“Fabulous tour, get to see parts of Athens outside of the tourist zone!”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

This service is excellent, and to say that it is free and staffed by volunteers shows just how passionate they are about their city.
We met our guide Gianni at Syntagma, walked through the gardens towards the stadium, but he showed us a way to see the stadium from the back, the views were amazing. We then carried on walking through areas like Kolonaki, Lycabettus, University, Omonia, Anafiotika, amongst others, and ended up finishing in Makrigianni. 11 Kms in total!! He showed us archaeological finds not in the guide books, such as the new building of the National Bank straddling parts of the old wall of the city. He also very kindly emailed a map of our walk for future reference.
When you complete the form on the website you state your interests, ages etc so they match a guide and a route specifically for you.
The website states that no monies or tips are allowed to change hands so we took out English tea and biscuits, as we didn't know if offering money would be frowned upon, and what amount to give....do you insult with too much or too little?!!
A great service and one of the best ways to see this amazing city!!

“Meet a local Athenian, get a free tour of local hot spots!”
Reviewed 28 March 2014

We participated in a wornderful program sponsored by the Athens Tourist Developent Office (ATEDCO), where an Athens local is matched up with your tour group for a free walking tour of Athens.

Rather than following a set itinerary--- This Is My Athens will allow the user to create their own customized tour depending on their individual preferences.

You are matched up with a local Athenian who is vetted out by ATEDCO.

We had a very likeable young man named "Giannis" who is an architect with a passion for buildings and archeology. He knew all the secret places where the tourists don't know about...

He took us on a 4 hour walk that started near the Acropolis, and ended at the base of Lycavittos Hill. In between, we were regaled with a wealth of valuable information.

Best of all, this program is completely FREE. You are not allowed to tip your guide, as they are prohibited from accepting gratuities by the rules of this program.

You need to sign up through the web site, and you must give them at least 3-4 weeks to allow the agency the amount of time to select a suitable match for your individual needs.

We highly recommend this Activity, it was the highlight of our week-long trip to Athens, Greece.
