Its a small family run 1 star hotel, clean and quiet near to Athens' main tourist attraction, Acropolis. The lady owner at the reception was nice but lacked "touristy information" that i would always like to get from hostel/hotel. I was given a room on 2nd floor but there was no lift in the building. The room was OK with double bed, tv, AC and cupboard. Washroom didn't have any shower curtain so the floor always got messy after taking shower but i got room service everyday. The hotel is 5mins walk to monastiraki station from where one can take direct metro to reach airport in 45 mins for 8 euros (april '14). Syntagma (constitution) square is 15min walk through main shopping district, where guard changing ceremony happens every hour in front of parliament. One can also take tram from syntagma to the Vouliagmeni beach. There are many eating places nearby.

Convenient location, easy walk to most major sites in town. Good room for cheap price although isn't a hostel with that type of vibe and then also isn't a nice room with decent bathroom so really is just a suitable place to spend the night. Read a few reviews about being in a dodgy area and it does appear that way and even some locals told us to be careful but didn't have any issues at all and didn't feel unsafe at all. Owners were friendly and helpful enough.

This being our first time to Athens we didn't know what to expect. We took bus 51 from the KTEL bus station to get to downtown Athens and then just walked to our hotel which was decently close. The hotel is about a 10 to 20 min walk away from all the major sites and a block away from a fresh veggie market. The hotel itself was exactly what we thought it would be for the cheap price we got it for. The tv really didn't work well but the internet signal was fine in our room. The staff are very friendly and they give you new towels and clean your room everyday. The only problem we had was the hot water was inconsistent for the shower. 2 nights out of 3 we had to wait anywhere from 20min to an hour to get hot water but when it finally came it never quit. We would recommend this hotel to anyone on a smaller budget.

Room Tip: Close to the Acropolis

Arriving:
We grabbed a cab from the airport and headed to the hotel. Cab ride was great, brought us through the meat market which was interesting to see. Upon exiting the cab ride we are welcomed by the glass door entrance to Athinaikon. The entrance is accompanied with an overwhelming smell of moth balls, thankfully the hotel does not smell like them inside.

About the hotel:
Hotel is simple and clean, which is my number one priority. Check out is at noon, which is a good time, enough to get up the morning of check out to go and do things. Typical of European accommodations, lights and ac unit only work when your room key is inserted in the slot. So in the summer, the room is a little hot when you first enter, but the ac is not long kicking in, thank goodness! A nice perk is that the beds are American double, not two twins put together, makes for comfortable sleep if you're a travelling couple. Soap, shampoo (no conditioner), linens and towels were provided, and the linens/towels were clean, phew.

Only complaint, lack of security:
The only complaint I had was that when leaving the hotel for the day, you had to leave the room key at the front desk. This made me a little uncomfortable since there were no lockable cupboards in the rooms. This made my wonder if the staff would pilfer anything. So we took our money and passports with us when we left for the day/night. However, after the paranoia subsided we were fine, not s thing as moved in our room, so I'd trust leaving things there. If you personally don't feel comfortable just take your valuables with you when you leave.

Location:
Great location! Two blocks from subway and three blocks from the ancient flea market. In the other direction the subway terminal is about ten blocks away, that's where we grabbed the subway to the airport. We managed to walk to the station with all of our bags, and I was in heels. So, it's not a bad trot at all. It's also right along the meat market, so there is lots to look along the way.

We would get up every morning and walked the three blocks to the market. There are cafes and vendor stations along the way, you can grab coffee or red bull and fresh pastries for breakfast. Once you make it to the plaza there is lots to do! Plenty of restaurants, stores and sites to see. It's right were plaka meets the ancient flea market.

All in all, it's a good, clean hotel in a great location.

Hints about being in Athens:
On a side note, Athens is a great city, but it's big and it's a walking city. We did the segwey two hour tour of the ruins, highly recommend it. Our tour guide was great at educating us about the sites and the segweys were a good way to see lots without exhausting yourselves walking in the heat! :) it was about $60 euro a person, but we'll worth it! We went to Athens in a group of 12, and the 4 of us that did the Segwey tours definitely saw more than the rest. The only sites we did on our own was the temple of Zeus, the walk in the Acropolis and the Olympic stadium.

Enjoy your time in Athens, reach out if you need more information!

Room Tip: No elevator - so you'll have to haul your luggage up the stairs. If this is a concern for you, a...

Thanks very much for your review Janine and also for the detailed description and guide tips on Athens. Im sure this will help many travelers visiting our city for the first time. I would even
suggest posting it on some of tripadivsor's forums with topics on Athens.
I would just like to point out a few reasons why we ask our customers to leave their keys at the front-deskwhen going out.

1) In case of an emergency evacuation to know who is in or out of the building
2) So no key is lost which will cost the customer 25Euro for the key card plus a new lock an extra 20Euro a total of 45Euro
3) For cleaning purpose of the empty rooms.

The hotel also has a safe-box in case you wish to deposit your valuables such as passports,
laptops, money etc. during your stay.

This hotel is in very good location, in between three main squares of the city (Sintagma, Monastiraki and Omonia), very close (not even 5 min walk) to the metro station Monastiraki (from there you take direct metro to the airport). There is a market (agora) next to it. It is very clean in common places and in the room. It is an old building but renovated and there is no smell that is characteristic for old buildings. The stuff is friendly and helpful (they even printed for my boarding pass). There is hot water and heating. The only minus for me was that the room was a bit dark but this is characteristic for most of the buildings in the centre of Athens.

The hotel can't be faulted on location for sure. While the neighborhood was a little unnerving at first (so much graffiti!), it's all quite safe. The streets were a little empty at first, we reached Saturday night and all shops remained closed Sunday as well. But come Monday morning, we were greeted with so much activity and life, took us a minute just to orient ourselves!
But I digress.. Back to the hotel. It's a 5 min walk to the Monastaraki square n station, 3 mins to one of the HOHO stops, regular bus stops n a couple of eateries, should u need a quick bite.
The room we got on the first night honestly was awful! I simply can't recollect the room number, or would've shared. But watch out for a three bed one in the corner on the 3rd floor. Small, cramped, musty, no ventilation.. A nightmare. N to make it worse, the ac wouldn't work! On calling reception to complain, we were very congenially told he wouldn't be able to do anything till morning :/ Did I mention we climbed 3 floors with really heavy luggage?:(
They fortunately changed our room with no fuss in the morning n we had a pleasant enough stay after that.
Would recommend the place if you don't plan on spending too much time in the room, want some place convenient and cost is as big a factor as it was for us! :)
