“Beautiful, authentic souvenirs”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

This is the retail outlet for Thetis Workshop, who spend a lot of their time doing ceramic reproduction work on official museum artefacts.

They create beautiful, authentic reproductions of historical items like necklaces, decorated pottery, toys and tableware, using traditional methods.

Each piece is unique and has its own character. The necklaces in particular are wonderful, with each one being made from workshop-fired and hand-selected beads, faience and semi-precious stones, strung to be worn in the ancient manner.

The store is located at the top of the Monastiraki tourist shopping area, about 10 minute's easy stroll from Monastiraki Square itself. Many people miss it or think it's just another typical trinket store, which is a big shame. If you want a beautiful, authentic and hand-crafted memento of your visit to the historic wonders of Athens, then Attic Black is the best choice you could make.

The woman who served me was extremely helpful, knowledgable and polite.

Additionally, if you're from an applicable overseas country - they will helpfully fill out the complicated forms that allow you to claim a tax-free refund available at Athens airport when you fly out. In my case as an Australian, for a purchase of about 220 euro there was a refund of 30 euro.

Highly recommended.

TIP: The shop may be closed at lunch time or at the hottest part of the day, despite what the official store hours say. If you find this is the case, ask one of the guys in the travel agent across the road, who are happy to indicate with sign language and pointing at their watch, when she might be back. Or call before visiting to confirm they'll be open when you plan to visit.
