“Simply excellent”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2013

Visited during April 2013. An excellent single purpose modern museum linked to the development of the acropolis. Spectacular. Read the display boards which set the scene. Set the superb displays against the view of the Acroplis, and the Parthenon, through the glass windows. See excavated ruins below the entrance walkway; view the Parthenon gallery on the top floor which has the same alignment and size as the original. Watch the video. Don't be dissapointed - check when they are open, early in your Athens stay!

“Must not miss!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2013

The new Acropolis Museum must be firmly noted in your Athens itinerary. It is just the right size for a few hours walk through the well-presented artifacts.

It was amazing to witness live restoration work using laser light on one of the original Caryatids from the Erechtheion on the day we visited. The models of the Acropolis through the ages was also wonderful and thought-provoking.

It is a must see to better understand and appreciate your trip to the Acropolis and Parthenon. Euro 7 entrance is well worth it. Came away from this place with new-found respect for Greece, it's culture and its people.

Bonus: The cafe within the museum serves the best frappe in Athens! Order it with extra milk.

Had a wonderful time in this museum - spent half a day and could have stayed longer! The design allows you to truly experience the majesty, grandeur and phenomenal accomplishment of the building and sculptures!

“The Soul of Athens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2013

As college professors with a passion for Greek culture, we visited the country almost annually throughout the 1980s and 90s. Like everyone else, we were sad and disappointed that the old museum at the Acropolis was uncomfortable to visit and could display and interpret so few of its treasures. After an absence of 15 years, we returned to Athens last week with great anticipation to at last visit the museum everyone had been waiting eagerly for throughout the years of our earlier visits.

WOW, were the endless delays in building this fine new facility ever worth it! This is a world-class museum that does justice to both its collection and its site. The airy modern architecture with its concrete pillars evokes the archaic and classical temples built on the Acropolis itself while preserving the very interesting aarchaeological site still being revealed beneath the museum. Altogether, the museum's siting, design (including the transparent cutaways that reveal the in-progress àrchaeological excavations below) and priceless collection place the visitor in the midst of a time continuum that is still evolving, so that the Acropolis is experienced as what it has always been, the core and soul of the city.

Don't just rush up to the top floor to view the Parthenon friezes. My personal favorite part of the the collection remains the korae and kouroi (idealized young women and men) now on view in a large pillared gallery flooded with natural light.

Like others, I wish the bookstore/gift shop were better, and as a disabled visitor approaching the museum up the very long outdoor ramp on a warm day I would have appreciated a bench to rest on midway -- but those are minor matters.

We salute Greece (and EU support) for this wonderful addition to the nation's numberless cultural riches, and hope that someday the British Museum, which already has wonderful treasures of its own, will return the Elgin Marbles to their rightful home here.
