“Ionion generosity saved us when Greece was on strike”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 August 2011

Our flight was delayed by hours so we missed our reservation; then our ferry was cancelled so we were stuck in Piraeus with no reservation and all the hotels were full. Despite everything, we were offered a lovely, clean room where we finally got a chance to sleep and figure out what to do next.
The breakfast room has wifi and was open all day long, great for last-minute trip rearranging, and the hotel is directly across from the port, with easy access to all the ferry offices. We were in Greece during great travel disruptions, but the Ionion's manager went above and beyond to help us get back on our way. A great place to stay on your way to or from the islands. It's not a luxury hotel, but it is an excellent value and an excellent place to experience the welcoming spirit of Greece.

Very convienient, 2 minutes from the X96 airport bus and just across the road from the island ferries.
The hotel is family run and all the staff were very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to accommodate your requirements. Very knowledgeable about the surrounding area, boats, bues etc,..
The rooms were clean and quiet and the air conditioning was efficient even though outside temp was 41o!!!
Plenty of hot water in a large airy shower and breakfast in the light and cool coffee room was a bonus.
The hotel also provides free wifi.
All in all a very pleasant stay, well done Takis and your staff.

We stay here regularly, because its just so damn convenient for the ferries, just around the corner from the train station or bus stop from the airport. And because the people who run it have always been helpful and friendly to us. If what you mainly need is a place to lay your head before or after a ferry then this works.

No matter what time you're arriving, just let them know. ok, the rooms could do with some tlc and the shower is cramped, but the beds are comfortable, the shower produces hot water, and the ac works, quietly. Don't expect a view, but the side street location means traffic noise is not an issue. So get off the plane at the airport, straight on to the train or bus to Piraeus, and fall into bed. Next morning a simple breakfast of coffee, eggs, bread and jam, and then the shortest of walks to the ferries, which when you're carrying luggage in 35 degrees C is the blessing. Or leave your luggage at the hotel during the day and do the tourist bit unemcumbered. It works for us.

My daughter has urged me to write this review, after exploring TripAdvisor herself and seeing the benefits of traveler reviews.

Our family of 5 stayed at the Ionian in late June 2008, as a layover before taking a ferry out in the morning. The booking was made at the Athens airport at the “hotel desk”; we had arrived at night, and a day early, due to a late change with Olympic Airways. The clerk was determined to put us into the Ionian and no other. He assured us that the shockingly high price of 300 Euros was well worth it, for the “family room, with American breakfast” at this hotel.

Well, a year later we still laugh about the shock of arriving at this creepy place. It’s on a very dark street, although fortunately only a short sprint from (or to!) the apparent safety of the well-lit main boulevard of the Piraeus harbor.

The “family room” was a regular twin room stuffed with 5 cots. There was barely room to step through or over these creaky metal cots with their saggy squeaky springs you’ll remember from summer camp. Could they be the very same ones?

We are used to small Greek bathrooms, but never have I seen smaller. As noted by the previous reviewer, the “door” doesn’t work and in fact cannot work, and there was no hot water at night or in the morning. What the bathroom did provide, however, was a non-stop, all-night-long, symphony of every toilet (and occupant) noise from seemingly every bathroom up and down the building. The building’s pipes are routed directly through the bathrooms: nice!

Greek hotels with mosquitoes in the vicinity, usually provide some means of protection in the room. Not so with the Ionian. There we were, jet-lagged and hot (did I mention the A/C is a joke, producing mostly noise but no cooling?), listening to the buzzing mosquitoes in the room, waiting for the next attack. The telltale blood spatters on the wall were a clue that we were not the first guests with this experience.

Morning came mercifully soon, and breakfast was the minimalist affair described accurately in the previous review. We have memories of a tiny smear of jam on a tiny bit of bread, one poached egg and an untouchable cup of Nescafe. The attendant was indeed the same unassuming fellow who does it all, morning and night.

We bid an “Adios, Ionian”, and were off to the large bakery a couple blocks away, before boarding the ferry to the islands. Never have I waved farewell so enthusiastically to the lovely town of Piraeus.

We stayed at the Ionion for one night after arriving on a late ferry. When booking beforehand, we had struggled to find anywhere else in Piraeus that wasn't either dodgy-sounding from reviews and/or extortionate, but from the reviews that we could find about Ionion, it seemed a fairly safe and reasonably-priced bet. We weren't expecting too much, however, which was perhaps a good thing.

I would describe the overall style of the Ionion as 'un-ironic retro'. From the bedspreads to the breakfast room, there is a distinct air of 'caught in the 70s' about the place. Not a problem as such, but if 'modern and swish' is more your thing, this probably isn't the place for you.

Our room was pretty small, but satisfactory. It seemed perfectly clean (but then it was perhaps hard to tell given the myriad of pattern exploding before our eyes - see photos), and the bed was reasonably comfortable. The ensuite bathroom was small but seemed clean. However, the concertina-style bathroom door was all but useless, given that it was impossible to fully close (meaning that while sitting on the toilet you would be looking out through a one-inch gap into the bedroom). Perhaps not ideal if bathroom exhibitionism isn't your thing. Another annoyance was the lack of hot water in the morning. This is ironic given that the Ionion claims itself to provide '24 hour hot water'.

The breakfast I can only really describe as a fairly weird experience. We were the only people in the breakfast room (decorated with some rather 'interesting' artwork), and each presented with a small metal tray on which was a tepid nearly hard-boiled egg, 2 slices of bread and plastic containers of jam and butter. There was no buffet and we were not offered any other food. Oh, by the way, we didn't ask for eggs. My boyfriend had been asked the night before whether he would like coffee in the morning. He was anticipating some nice filter coffee, so was somewhat disappointed to be presented with a sachet of instant coffee and a jug of boiled water. It would be so easy to just say that this breakfast was terrible, but I almost feel bad about saying that - it was all presented with such ceremony by the waiter/receptionist/owner (the same guy appeared to fulfil all these roles!) that I believe he genuinely thought he was providing a top-class breakfast.

All of these things wouldn't have been such an issue but for the fact that Ionion isn't exactly cheap (but then nowhere else in the area seems to be either). The major selling point for Ionion is its proximity to the port (less than 5 mins walk) and the metro to Athens (2 mins walk), so it is ideally positioned for late/early ferry arrivals/departures. The area around the hotel is not particularly attractive, and perhaps a little intimidating at night, but then this is perhaps characteristic of the area around many other major ports.

To summarise: not horrendous, but probably overpriced for what you get. In general, it just needs a serious overhaul to bring it up to date and in line with what many tourists today would probably expect for the price.

  • Liked — Convenient location for accessing the port and the metro to Athens
  • Disliked — Unimpressive breakfast, no hot water, old-fashioned...
