Stayed here for 7 nights with my family including 2 young children. We were put in this hotel after booking the Rinella Hotel but due to no room we were put here. The way this was handled was terrible as we were taken to the Rinella at 1am with 2 tired babies, went through the check in process to then be told they would arrange a taxi to the new hotel for 1 night. Luckily we managed to get them to let us stay at Laguna as Rinella was shocking and I will review this separately.

First up this is not a 5 star hotel. It is perhaps just a 4 star hotel if not a 3+. The building itself is beautiful and this is perhaps 5 star standard but the hotel on a whole is not. People who review this as a 5 star hotel have quite clearly never been to a true 5 star hotel.

The food standard was good and plenty of choice in the main restaurant. The a la carte restaurants are fantastic and of excellent quality however it is very hard to get reservations in here. You need to book before 8am up to 3 days before you want to dine.

Rooms are clean and pleasantly decorated. Not 5 star standard though.

Serving Staff - Nearly all the staff at this hotel are fantastic particularly the restaurant and bar staff. All friendly and very helpful. Whatever they are paid isn't enough. Can't say the same about the reception staff (negatives below).
Food - Good quality and choice especially a la carte restaurants which are let down by near impossibility to reserve. The Crepe bar and ice cream bar are both fantastic. Never busy and lovely treats.

Reception Staff - They are much more curt and not as helpful as all of the other staff in the hotel. I have never been in another 5 star hotel where a receptionist dealing with you breaks off midway to answer the phone. They all seemed to do this and this is shameful. Also 1 receptionist really messed up our transfer back to airport and we were lucky to make check in.
Pool / Beach - Nowhere near enough sunbeds on any of the pools or beach. Also the pool areas are too crowded, no room to chill out. Beach is small with small stones as opposed to sand.
Drinks - Limited supply outside of main bars. In the restaurant as they were so busy you could only expect 1 drink per sitting. The "Champagne" in the Champagne bar is more like Asti but the setting is nice.
Entertainment - Whilst the evening shows are what they are and are ok there is not enough entertainment at the hotel or choice of activities. It can be very boring.
Russians - The place is full of them which would not be a problem if they weren't so rude. Queue pushing, glaring at you and generally thinking they own the place. They let their children run riot in the pool. I did not see any good manners from 1 of them whilst I was there and the place is probably 70% occupied by them. Not impressed and would never go to a hotel with so many Russians again.
Check Out - Had booked a late check out at the Rinella as we had 2 babies. This was not adhered to at the Laguna and it took me along time and alot of persuading before they would give us an extra 6 hours in the room albeit at a charge of 45 euros.
Wi-fi - Most 5 star hotels provide their guests with free wi-fi but here it is charged for at around £40 per week. The speed and reliability is to be fair good.

So in all a mixed review. Not a totally unpleasant time at all but some improvement needed to get it "up there". Taking everything into consideration I would only recommend this if you aren't expecting a true 5 star experience.

We stayed here for 7 nights as a large group and found all the staff very helpfull. The food was generally pretty good but much better in the separate restaurants.
The animation team (in particular shakira) were fantastic and kept our little girl very happy at the mini disco. Would definitely come back here!

We travelled as a group of four adults (accompanied by son and his girlfriend in their 20s) from 8th-15th July 2014 so we have been back approximately 10 hours.
We arrived in the early hours of 9th July following a delay at Gatwick. The chap manning the reception desk on our arrival was very helpful and checked in 6 parties quite swiftly. We were taken to our rooms in a "golf"buggy and the porter took our cases into the room for us, explaining the air conditioning, mini bar and safe. Sandwiches, fruit and a complimentary half bottle of wine were waiting for us which were very welcome!

We had read mixed reviews before travelling relating to food and sun beds so here are our thoughts. I based the variety of food on "would my mother go hungry if she were here?" (She prefers to eat meat and vegetable meals - sauce, tomato, garlic and mayonnaise definitely don't feature in her diet) and the answer is "no". There was plenty of variety at each meal - youghurts, fresh fruit, breads, omelettes, bacon/eggs for breakfast, hot meats, fish, salads, pata, veg for lunch and similar for dinner. Those who say "there was nothing to eat.......and we had to eat out at restaurants in Hersonissos..." must eat an incredibly boring and very limited, unimaginative diet. The restaurant staff Popi and Stelios (who looked after the outside dining area) were very attentive and kept us provided with coffee at breakfast and wine and water at lunch/dinner. Popi was fab, she bustled about keeeping the tables clear and always had a cheery greeting for each guest regardless of nationality.

We ate in the A La Carte restaurants - Cretan, Mexican and Asian. The food was very good and very filling with plenty of choice and the ability to order as much as you want. The Creperie was frequented several times and again there was plenty of choice as to fillings - sweet and savory!

The bar staff were attentive. The champagne bar offered a choice of 6 or so cocktails and the other bars seem to be generally well stocked- the offerings were certainly drinkable but might not be along the same lines at to what you might drink in the uk but absolutely fine considering we were all inclusive.

Sunbeds- always a contentious subject and no different here. Your fellow guests are the steriotypical German and Russian and therefore seem to think that sunbeds are theirs for the taking unless you play the "when in Rome" game. I expected to have a sunbed each day, so to make sure this happened, I had the towels out by 7am when on my way to reception to book the a la Carte restaurants (booking opens at 7am and is recommended by the staff that you come early to avoid disappointment. Most tables appear to be booked by 8am). Our towels stayed in place and our beds were occupied once we'd breakfasted. It would seem that us Brits are finally playing the Germans et al at their own game as there were there were a number of us all doing the same.

The hotel could make use of the space it has available and put more tables and chairs in the bar areas without making it overcrowded. Whilst we didn't have a problem getting somewhere to sit and enjoy a drink, I would Imagine it could be a problem in the height of season.

Also I would like them to enforce the rule of not allowing children to help themselves in the restaurant without being accompanied by a parent. The foreign kiddies (aged approx 7 and above) are a bit of an irritation with their inimitable taste tests. A stern glare and not allowing them to push in solved any problems we may have had. The only staff member who showed herself up was Tatiana. She proceeded to have a very loud and rude phone call by the outdoor restaurant at breakfast yesterday morning. Whether it was personal or work related was irrelevant and despite not being able to translate the language, her body language, tone and manner were entirely inappropriate to be on display in front of the guests; however what she lacks in good grace and manners the rest of the staff more than make up for - very charming, polite and welcoming! We would stay again as it was a lovely relaxing holiday. I have given the over experience 4 out of 5 as there is always room for improvement.

"Did you know" the abundance of fur shops are purely there for the Russians who make significant purchases as seemingly it is cheaper than buying at home. The fur coats are make in northern Greece and is seemingly big business!

The Thomas Cooks reps were not overly brilliant. It was chaotic on arrival at Heraklion and we were ussured on to various coaches for our onward journey. The rep who was imparting various bits of information prior to the bus departure was seemingly wanting sympathy that she would stillbe working at 2am, which at midnight is the last thing anyone wanted to hear and the general comments were that it was her job! Equally on arrival at the airport yesterday it was another free for all with young reps referring to us as "guys" and not being overly clear on what the process was and the rationale as to why. Thomas Cook you need to look into this and rectify it.

Room Tip: We had a room with a sea view and that's exactly what we had. Quiet room at the back of the hote...

Arrived very tired after delayed flights, total time travelling from our uk home to airport 12 hours. Arrival was about 11.30pm, a member of staff arrived and offered pink champagne to half the group but did not appear again to give to the other members of the group. So whilst it was a nice touch we shared drinks.
On arrival to our room which was beautiful and clean apart from the ants running across the room floor, we were slightly disappointed that we could not find a sandwich or anything in our room other than an apple. We were told a crepe bar was open until 1am but we were too tired to go looking for a crepe bar so we went hungry. Drinks however were free and the fridge was well stocked throughout our stay.
The restaurant serves a very good selection of food and the staff are very obliging- only complaint is could be slightly hotter.
No tea and coffee making facilities in the bedrooms-this could be improved for people who enjoy a cup of yea or coffee in their rooms.
Overall the hotel and staff are lovely and so is Crete in general but did not like or understand the large number of fur shops around, even in the hotel.

Will definitely return next year.

We went to this beautiful resort for 7 nights in June and had an amazing time
The best part was the 5 alacarte restaurants the cretan and the italian were exceptional and can be compared any high street restaurant in Britain

Well worth going in the morning to the front desk to book in restaurants the maitre de Sophie is amazing and does a fantastic job of feeling very welcome there

the champagne bar in the evening is well worth a visit and last but not the least the Creperies is fantastic!!

the things that could be improved
1. Wi fi is just about adequate and dont except to do more than check your emails
i2. connections are not great. it is on its own and would advise taking a taxi (7eurs) to Hersonnis and then plan your journeys
We went on an Cosmos arranged highlights tour it does only does the Palace of Knossos if you want to see anything else you need to plan your own
3. the sunloungers and umbrellas are free on the beach which is a bonus but the beach is coarse sand with quite a lot of big stone on the shore

OVerall a 5 star experience felt wonderfully relaxed at the end of it . the best part of it was the hotel staff who were extremely helpfula and they definetely deserve a 6 stars .

Room Tip: rooms away from the main building if you want less noise

We aren't beach people, but if you are the beach is a bit gritty
